    VIPS!: Good, safe food

    by shdw100 Written Jun 6, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

VIPS is actually owned by Wal-Mart, believe it or not! They keep a very clean, affordable restaurant with all kinds of authentic items on the menu. They also have the basics, such as a burger and fries if your stomach is not handling the local food very well. It's priced good and very clean.

Colosso: Good variety of homemade Italian

    Fettuccine at Colosso

Having been a while since we had eaten decent Italian, we decided to try Colosso which was recommended to us.

The main chef is an Italian and the food shows it. The menu is only available in Spanish, but some of the staff speak a bit of English if you so need it. There is no dress code, but the restaurants on this street are all in the higher end, so the locals who come here may be dressed a bit nicer and looking to treat themselves well for a special night.

The main ground floor dining room is a general family dining area. The upper level is a bit more intimate with live music playing softly.

Favorite Dish: The wood fired oven pizzas are all good.
The pechuga a la plancha con pesto is very tender.
The fettuccine a la mare was very good too!

(see restaurant names in text below): Options along Restraunt Road

by DSwede Written Oct 8, 2011

The relatively new street of Av Paseo de la Choca is the spot where most of the higher tier, quality restaurants are located. They are all right next to each other, so if you get here either by car or taxi, a two minute walk will take you by all of them.

These restaurants are typically above the standard for the locals. So if you come here, you will see those who are either a little more affluent or are out for a special occasion. There are no dress codes per se, but decent conservative attire will be more the norm.

Favorite Dish: El Eden - serves Mexican foods with more of a local Tabasco style
La Jangada - serves Brazilan foods, rich with grilled meats
Rodizio - has a menu more similar to what you would find north of the border in USA
Restaurant/Bar Angus - is a trendy steak house.
Colosso - Italian food (see my separate tip for details)

La Estancia: Great Steaks, Great Wine, Reasonable Price

by Laumas Written Jun 3, 2007

I have been stationed in Villahermosa for almost a year now, and several of us from my company have been going to this restaurant once or twice a week. The reason is that it has the best steaks we have tasted here, at the most reasonable prices. This is an Argentinian restaurant, so the specialty is beef. I suggest you start out with an empaniada, several varieties which are all excellent. Serves with every meal is a bowl of bread, (slightly stale), with some excellent spreads, which I suggest using on your empaniada.

Besides the food, the service and wine selection are excellent. The unique thing about this restaurant is that the great wines are offered at such low prices. I had a great cabernet at the restaurant for 110 pesos. The next day I was at the supermarket and the same wine was being sold for 120 pesos! Other restaurants in the area charge @40 -350 for the same bottle of wine.

Favorite Dish: The Angus- Ribeye here is to die for. It is a 400 gram beauty, still-sizzling on a metal platter with onions infused with serrano peppers and broiled potatoes. It's the right choice!

Everything that we have tried is good. They have a great selection of shrimp and other seafood.

Some nights there is a live band.

    Favorite Dish: Shrimp Diablo
