Be prepared for hot weather
  • Tip Rating:
  • Until they change the rules on climbing the pyramid, bring shoes with good treads, the pyramid can be pretty slippery, especially the interior passageway to see the red jaguar.

If the top of your head burns, a good idea to bring a hat.

    Sunscreen!

Bring a lot of film or a digital camera with lots of memory. This is an awesome place to take photos!

Bring lots of water! Alternatively there are places on site to buy water, they sell it at the hotel near the entrance and the snack shop near the cenote. It didn't seem too overpriced.

    Take your Student/Teacher Card
Don't forget your ISIC or other student card :). They charge a bit less to students and teachers.

    Sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes.
Loose fitting, light colored long-sleeve shirt and long pants (unless you like coating yourself with DEET). You'll actually feel cooler wearing these instead of shorts and short-sleeve shirts. (Those Bedouins knew what was what.)

    Water...extra water...extra, extra water

    Sun Lotion and Sneakers
The Yucatan gets pretty hot in the spring/summer, so wear light clothing-- shorts, tank tops or t-shirts. We saw people in jeans who seemed miserably hot. Also, wear sneakers or other comfortable shoes, as you'll be doing a lot of walking.

Sun lotion is a must. Don't just lotion before you go-- bring some to reapply.

Bring plenty of water and keep hydrated. If you run low, there's a place to buy more in the Welcome Center. A small store near the Ossuary and another near the Sacred Cenote also sell water, along with other drinks and snacks.

What to take to Chichen Itza
A small pack to carry camera, sun block etc. is handy.

Wear hiking shoes and comfortable shorts because it will be hot. Take a poncho in case it rains because after spending all this money and time you don't want to waste time inside if it rains.

    sun block, band aids?

Check your film and batteries. You don't want to buy them there.

Take a frozen bottle or two of water. It won't be enough but as expensive as it is there it will help, especially on the bus.

There are no lockers at the cenote so if you have no companion to whom you could leave your personal stuff, be sure to have a waterproof bag. You can only leave it at a corner where everyone passes by so be sure not to bring along any valuables.

After a day at Chich, you can go to the Ik Kil cenote nearby (about 5 mins. away) to cool off. Then bring your trunks or bathing suit and towel. It would be best of course if you know how to swim but if not, don't despair. There are floatation vests for rent at the entrance.

It would be ideal if your camera is waterproof.

At the time of writing (May 2008) the entrance fee at Ik Kil is 60 pesos.
