A picture of the Ballcourt where games were played
  • Tip Rating:
  • Juego de Pelota or The Great BallcourtThis Ball court is 90 meters long ,and it was believed to be the largest ballcourt in the Mayan world .In this ball court there was such an amazing echo and someone said you could here the talking from across the court ,well I never went inside there so I don't know if that is correct
It is very small in my picture ,but on each side of the walls of this court there is a stone
ring and it is believed that two teams ,each had 7 players played and needed to get a rubber ball through one of the rings to make a score , hands and feet were not allowed to be used .
Lori and I saw a demonstration of this game in X Caret ,an Eco Park near Playa del Carmen ,it was part of the great almost 2 hour show that showed the History of the Mayan people .I was a fantastic show .

This is layout of the ancient City of Chichen Itza
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the map that is in the brochure that you will receive when you enter.
This Chichen Itza site/city is one of the most studied and visited ruins of the Mayan world and it is in continues renovation
The Mayan (Itzaes) settled here around 900 AD .
They abandened this City around 1250 A D
and no reason is known .
This City had great power and admiration .
Francisco de Montejo founder of Merida (1540 A D ) considered making this City his Capital City.
This city covers around 25 square Kilometers.
The Elite resided in beautiful decorated and brightly painted Palaces.
It is believed that anywhere between 50.000 to 100.000 lived around this area in
    thatch -roofed Palapas or Cottages.
We enjoyed being here inmensely and I recommend a trip to Chichen Itza to anyone .

I looks like two stone hooks ,I do not know what they are called or the purpose of being there.

The Sacred Cenote of Chichen Itza .
  • Tip Rating:
  • For the Mayan people the " Sacred Cenote ''had a religous meaning and also a social one.
It is believed that human's were sacrificed in this Cenote ,but it has not been proven to be true ,so who knows eh .
But they did find precious stones clay objects and other metal objects or pieces of objects of course they were broken after they were found .
There was a small building close near the Cenote that was probable used to dispose of the items and thrown from a platform or something.

Temple of the Jaquars one side of the Ball court
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Temple of the Jaquars is located west of the Pyramid and SE corner of the Ball Court.
There are two large Serpentine Columns at the doorway to the upper temple .
There are coloured paintings that cover the wall .these paintings tell the strong military presence here in Chichen Itza .

    CHICHEN-ITZA is a wonderful ancient City .
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the entrance of '' Chichen Itza
which means the place of the '' Mouth of the Well of the Itza.''
inside here is a world from the past .
The old (viejo) Chichen was founded 400
A D ,the New (nuevo) started around 850
A D .Of course an overnight visit to Chichen Itza is the best way to go because there is so much to see.
But I think 3 -4 hours is enough ,of course that is different for everyone .
Take you time and spend time to see the awsome details in all the colums and all the marvelous buildings
    Enjoy my pictures

The '' Tzompantli '' or platform of the Skulls
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is believed that the enemies would be scared off by showing these pictures of skulls on a wide and T shaped stone structure that was 60 meters long and twelve meters wide ,(haha what a way to welcome potential friends eh .)
The heads on display were the heads of beheaded prisoners or any one that was sacrificed to the Gods .
During excavation of this platform human skulls were found to support this theory ,and that is pretty amazing I think.

The Plaza of the thousand Columns in Chichen Itza
  • Tip Rating:
  • Plaza of the thousand Columns - Ruinas Chichén-Itzá
    Plaza of the thousand Columns

This picture taken from the top of the Pyramid '' El Castillo ''.
It is an awsome sight to see these Columns from up there.
The thousand Columns were build between
    900 & 1200 A D and they were painted .
These Columns use to have a roof ,but it is not known for sure what type of roof it was .
With a roof over these Columns this area would have been great for large meeting halls and that's what they probably were.

We did not see the evening light show ,but as you can see in this picture there is an evening light show .
The price for entrance into Chichen Itza is
38 pesos ,let's round it of to about $4 Us dollars ,not at all a lot for money for what you get to see .There are several prices ,some include a tour guide. Not sure what they all are
For us the Bustrip including pick up from our Hotel cost us
    $44 Us dollars a person .
I think that was a pretty good deal.
