Museo Zacatecano

by jmbredeck

On Monday almost all of the museums are closed - but not this one. What a break, because it's a great place with some unusual stuff to look at. For starters they have an impressive collection of small retablos painted during the period of religious persecution after the Reform Laws. These are basically little altarpieces people hid in their homes (to avoid punishment, imprisonment, death) and were painted by non-professionals. If you like ex-votos (and everybody does now becuase Frida liked them), then you'll like these. Bring along a guide to the Saints or the Bible to decipher who's who, or get lucky (as I did) with the friendly docent who walked through the entire collection, patiently explaining all the Bible stories I'd forgotten or never learned. In the 2nd part of the museum they have an exhausting display of Huichol embroidery - since my knowledge of this is next to zero, it was...

Francisco Goitia Museum

by rmdw

This museum was once the governor's mansion. It now serves as a museum with exhibits on the art and history of the Zacatecas region. One large exhibit is the work of Goitia, a famous local painter from the early 1900's.

Explore the Parks of Zacatecas

by rmdw

Throughout Zacatecas are numerous small but beautiful parks. They're highly sculpted, usually with an array of different flowers, trees, and fountains.Take a break from your shopping and exploring by just sitting down on a bench in a park and relaxing under a shady tree.

Wander the streets of Zacatecas

Zacatecas is a walker's paradise! Find a place to park your car (and write down where it is!) and then explore the city aimlessly. The beautiful old streets have wonderful surprises at every turn. The city is also built on the side of a mountain so, much like San Francisco, it is quite hilly in places. Eventually you may choose to hail a taxi to get you to the next locale.

The Zacatecas Cathedral

by rmdw

While you're in Zacatecas be sure to visit the magnificent cathedral. Before exploring inside take the time to carefully soak in the immaculate detailing on the outside walls. It's quite spectacular!
