San Cristobal de las Casas is situated in the mountains of the state of Chiapas. Known for it's beautiful and colorful churches as well as the arts and crafts that are sold here, you will not be disappointed by exploring this place and the surrounding villages. Local artesians are always selling their crafts for fairly inexpensive prices. With the cool climate and mountain setting, San Cristobal has a lot to offer. Watch out for the bus ride coming from Tuxla-Gutierrez as it's very curvey, so you may get a little sick!

The mountain setting and the indiginous culture that surrounds you everywhere made me think "This is what Mexico is!" Facinating little town!

Villahermosa, located in the state of Tabasco, is a wealthy city because of it's situation close to the oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico. A rather modern town with large buildings and modern hotels and restaurants, Villahermosa has a lot to offer. We used it as a base to explore the nearby ruins of Palenque, but it also has some nice, secluded beaches. Be ready to be hot here as it is on the edge of the jungle, and the close proximity to the gulf makes the humidity high!

Nice modern town with many things to do and see. Good base for seeing the ruins of Palenque

If you plan a visit to Mexico, Oaxaca should be on your list. A pleasant town that sits up in the highlands of Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca, with a great climate. Monte Alban ruins are close by. You can buy many arts and crafts items by the indigenous people, although they are a little more pricey here as this has become more of a touristy town. You can get a good feel for the indigenous people here just by sitting in the beautiful zocalo at night. There are also some nearby attractions such as El Tule and Hierve el Agua which are cool to explore. You can get a good feel of how Mexico is by visiting Oaxaca

I love visiting Monte Alban with it being up on the plateau and viewing the valley of Oaxaca. The people are wonderful and the crafts are excellent. You will not be disappointed by Oaxaca!

What can be said about the city of Mexico City, the largest city in the world! It has everything, arts, ancient ruins, culture, vibrant night life, modern hotels, financial district, a zoo, the best archeological museum in the world, the second largest futbol stadium in Latin America, and the largest Zocalo in Latin America, just to name a few things. A world class city that can cater to all needs, Mexico City is a wonderful city to explore. Be careful of the high altitude when you arrive as it can leave you a little breathless and watch out for those world famous VW beetle taxis!

The thing that I liked most about Mexico City was the many things that could keep you busy: the museums, the ruins by the zocalo, Bellas Artes, sports, etc. It was truly a city with a pulse!

Puebla, located in the state of Puebla, is known for it's colorful downtown that is plastered with Talavera ceramic tiles. These tiles adorn many of the buildings and add a beauty that is hard to describe. With it's large zocalo and cathedral, as well as attractions such as Africam Safari, the ruins of Cholula, Popocatapetl, and the Volkswagon plant nearby, there are many things that you can do here to keep you occupied for a two or three days. The people are very friendly and always willing to help!

Warm, friendly people in an excellent climate setting in the shadow of Popo, the smoking volcano

Veracruz, which is situated on the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Veracruz, is an important town for the production of Mexican oil. Not thought of much as a touristy town, the city does have a lot to offer, such as a world class aquarium, beaches north and south of the city that are secluded and pratically empty, and a great harbor front for shops and restaurants. A tropical city, be ready to sweat as this place is probably one of the hottest that I have ever been to! If you get a chance, you should also visit nearby Antigua, supposedly the place where Cortez first landed

I liked Veracruz for it's comfortable setting next to the gulf, the deserted, pristine beaches, and the realitve inexpensive costs.

Pronounced tro-HAY, these little cabins are traditional dwellings for the people around the highland areas in the Michoacan. Very different from the adobe we are used to seeing, I found them so quaint and fascinating, and not out of line with a little cabin you would find in the hills of Alberta. The posts are distinctively carved, and it seems no two are alike.

They are built in two styles: the "chalet" style we see in some cabins, with two steep slopes that they call "two waters" or like the one pictured here, with four parts to the roof, called "four waters". This particular one in the picture was at the museum in Patzcuaro, as I didn't have the nerve to tell our driver to pull over when I saw one on the road to take a picture. I now regret being so shy.
