One of my freinds married a mexican girl from Veracruz a few years ago and had 2 kids with her.I went to visit him and his mexican family out on the countryside outside of Veracruz. It was very nice to visit a place that very very rarely sees tourists and a very good way to get to know Mexico away from the tourist spots.

Mexico has a daily english newspaper called "the news".It´s a pretty good paper that gives you a nice rundown on the main news in Mexico and the world and it´s a well written paper that is easy to navigate through. It can be a little hard to get outside Mexico City, but get a copy if you can and learn a bit more about the current affairs in Mexico.www.thenews.com.mx

Hey folks. Thank-you so much for all your tips. For the skeptics: yes, I am aware I am using a casual tone and didn't give really any basic info on what I am going to do there. For the record, I have a telecommuting job which I am bringing with me, and which will get me through for awhile. And I admit, yes, I have not done a whole lot of planning but, well, I've lived abroad before in difficult countries and feel fairly competent at this. Promise I won't get kidnapped or start ferrying drugs ;). Worse case scenario, I come home.Anyway, if anyone has any other advice on living in Mexico City, or Mexico in general, please let me know. And don't worry about me. Promise I'll be fine.cheers!
I feel that it is best to spend pesos, but a credit card that does not charge high fees for exchange or ATM use in a foreign country can be very useful. You can use it at ATMs for cash, make purchases at larger stores, or to pay bills at reputable hotels, clubs or restaurants. At least one VT member strongly advises against using a credit card at restaurants and clubs in Mexico due to a reported high credit card fraud history. I have used my card for years without difficulty, but I do take precautions. I protect my PIN and I never let the card out of my sight. For example, I do not hand my card to a waiter to go off and pay my bill as I do commonly in the US. I go up and hand it directly to the cashier and observe very carefully the transaction. Usually buying things with a credit card will be more expensive than cash in Mexico either because the shops that will accept a card charge have...
Hi,I take something called Immunglobulins and put in my smoothies. My nutritionist told me to take it before I went to Cancun. It boosts the good bacteria in your intestinal tract so bad bacteria doesn't have a chance. It's better to prevent than to take anti-diarhea medication once you're already sick. You can order from Bruce at Healing Choices. 1-407-321-1377. The stuff is called IGG 2000.
......but let`s GO!!!!!Always when I go to a foreign country I visit a cementery- I think that these places, which I actually don`t like, give you a good insight on the culture, on how the people are and what they care about, if they care about the past and lots of things more. And I think Mexican cementaries broke my stereotype of a tipical cementary that`s sad and grey.....they were just like the Mexicans are- colourful, full of live and hope for a life after this one...and you can even play chess with your loved ones that have passed away.....check it out!!!!

We recently got back from a holiday to Tulum and loved every minute. Here are my tips and experiences: Beach-wise there is a long stretch in Tulum from Maya Tulum hotel towards the south which is just to die for - really, it's paradise! And hardly any people. And pelicans and other big beautiful birds flying overhead and diving into the sea. The other stretch from the Tulum ruins is gorgeous too, but more people, so it depends on your preference. Accommodation-wise, there are lots of little hotels and cabanas all along the beach. If you keep heading south down that road you'll get to the Sian Kaan Reserve and you can do a tour there with a hotel called Cesiak (I think you can stay there too but it's very out in the sticks). My cousins did a kayak tour which they really enjoyed. For cenotes (natural waterholes connected by underground river systems) you really must go to Hidden Worlds...

I have been twice there and have never gotten sick. We are not especially careful either! Just use common sense. Don't drink out of the tap. Don't drink on any tours...even if they say it is safe. The big thing to me is that we bring kaopectate (sp) pink TABLETS and pop one or two if our stomach feels even slightly queasy. Never had any shots either. But do what feels right to you. Also drink lots of bottled water!! Be careful of seafood. We eat plenty of it (actually I prefer it over most beef or chicken you'll find there) but watch out for food that has sat out in the sun or heat for a while. Common sense.
1.Search the internet seriously. There are lots and lots of schools. You can chose from very large cities with many schools to small city/towns with only a single school. There are also small cities with lots of schools and usually lots of tourists. When I searched for my older son I found two schools in small towns (Zacatlan was one and another northwest of Morelia) which seemed interesting, but he chose Oaxaca. 2. Ask your friends and search VT for personal recommendations. My son and two friends loved the Cultural Center School in Oaxaca. He now speaks Spanish. 3.Try to make a committment which makes it important for the school that you succeed. Many students go to a school for just a week and do not commit to an intensive effort. I would think 2 weeks of 1 on 1, or 6 weeks of regular classes would be a good staring point. My younger son who studied in Bolivia benefited from this with...
