Learn Spanish

by melosh

The most important preparation would be to learn Spanish, because it will open the way to the people and culture. You can search the web and chose from the large number of schools available with different styles of instruction. You can usually make your arrangements over the internet, though calling and talking to the school can be helpful in judging their competence and making sure that they understand your needs. I would seriously suggest that you consider schools outside of Mexico City if you can. They tend to be cheaper and the cities or towns are better places to interact with Mexican people and culture. Also the general cost of living with a Mexican family or on your own will be less. Personally, I would avoid beach resort schools, schools in very large cities (Mexico City and Guadalajara) and a few towns with an excess of tourists and schools (Cuernavaca, Guanajuato, and maybe San...

currency exchange

by leigh767

you're far better off getting money from ATMs then from the foreign currency exchange outlets because banks have better exchange rates. as for the tip, before you home country contact your bank and get them to Increase the credit limit so that you can take out more money in one go from the ATM while in Mexico. this would also help to save from transaction fees which are usually about USD 0.70-1.50.

Mexcio on a budget

by leigh767

As a student going on a three week long trip around Mexico, cost was definitely an issue. for the budget travelers out there, I would like to assure your act it is completely possible to survive on USD10 or even less per day, accommodation excluded. this covers food, transportation, Internet café, and admission fees. we even bought a piñata for the New Year's!as a point of comparison, my three week long trip cost just under USD 500 (excluding airfare). My friends and I stayed in a Four star hotel in Mexico City as well as hotels and several hostels for the rest of the journey. if you are really looking to save money, the street vendors selling USD 1 dollar tortas ( Mexican-style hamburgers) are a good bet because they are filling and delicious. Set meals including salads, Pasta, roasted chicken, and tortillas can be found in smaller towns such as Palenque for under USD 3. The most...

The Pyramids of Teotiuachan

by roamer61

The pyramids of Teotiuachan outside of Mexico City is one of the most imposing sites in the americas. I highly recommend it for all visitors to Mexico City and environs. The Temples of the Sun and Moon are exceeded in size only by the pyramids in Egypt. There are other temples and sites of interest as well, such as adobes which likely belonged to the buildes of the city. So, for anyone with even a slight interest in archeololgy or history, Teotiuachan is a must. Photo is Temple of the Sun. My fondest memory was the rich history and the politeness of much of the populace.

Entrance requirements - tks & sufficient funds.

by melosh

I have visited Mexico over 20 times begining with visits as a student and I have never been asked to show a return ticket or proof of sufficient funds. I have never seen or heard this asked of anyone else while I stood in line waiting for my turn at immigration, but a VT member from Spain reports that he had been asked 3 times out of 13 entries. So although infrequent, the question might be asked. Arrival in Mexico without the resources needed for departure would be a problem and not just at entrance. I do suspect that this might become a more important immigration question if you later wanted to try to extend your visit beyond the 90 days. If this issue arose at anytime you could always buy a fully REFUNDABLE air ticket. A credit card would be particularly useful for this purchase because it would not shrink the money you had on hand. Personally, I would not buy a return ticket before...
