The houses....

by PolishChick

........are probably one of the coolest things in this wonderful country and one of my foundest memories. The houses are everywhere, you would say, and what`s so cool about it? Yup, that`s right, but only in Mexico are they so colourful and so live...You go down the street and there you go....yellow, green, blue, orange....Instead of going people-watching you can surely go houses-watching, especially that when the house changes its owner it usually changes the colour the next day.....So if you feel like going red, bright pink, black and orange stripes, yellow with green dots, orange and blue, little animals, leaves, yellow desert with brown lions............whatever whatever Dorota.........JUST GO FOR IT !!!!!

Obsidian

by TheWanderingCamel

The pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico loved obsidian - a form of glass that occurs naturally when lava cools rapidly and freezes before crystals can form - and used it in all sorts ofdecorative and practical ways. It was particularly lethal when cut to form the blade of a sword , one edge cut straight , the other serrated, forming a weapon capable of severing the limbs and heads of men, and even the head of a horse. There is hardly a site in Mexico where obsidian artifacts have not been found - domestic items, ritual objects, decorative detailing in temples and tombs. Reasonably plentiful in this region of volcanoes, easy to work, versatile and recyclable - a gift of the gods from the earth, it's no wonder it was so valued. It's also very beautiful - gleaming black, dark green, grey or brown that changes colour depending on the way it is cut. Small impurities in the molten lava produce...

Proper propriety

by TheWanderingCamel

Definitely shades of duenas and their charges here in these park seats in Merida. How many young lovers do you think these love seats have accommodated with perfect propriety over the years - longing looks but no improper touching the order of the day? I thought they were great fun!

The forests and ruins of Yucatan and Chiapas house the most interesting and strange animals. Look into the corners and you'll find iguanas. Look into the air and you can watch colorful butterflies and birds.

Palenque

by spalatino

Stayed at El Panchan, some 4 km out of the city on the half way to Ruinas. Very interesting place, with accomodation for everybody. Few restaurants, tour operators. Hotel Margarita y Ed is very nice, rooms with private bath and warm water (ca 130 MXP/person). Just opposite the hotel there is Jungle Palace, simple cabanas from 50-100 MXP, shared bathroom, in the middle of the rain forest. Interesting guests from 2-92 years. However, not family place , more a bit backpackers place.Ruinas at Palenque were real great surprise for me, in the middle of the rain forest, not too many tourists, great place (after Tikal the best ruins I've seen)

even a little bit of spanish opens many doors

by susiemargare

try to speak spanish, even if rudimentary; the people do appreciate it, tho many mexicans speak english. be extremely polite, and SMILE A LOT. people from the united states should refer to themselves as 'norteamericanos,' not simply 'americanos.'to say, "my name is X," say "me llamo X" (may yahm-oh).greet people with "hola" (oh-lah, with just the barest more emphasis on the second syllable, this is the equivalent of "hi"), "buenos dias" (bway-nohs dee-ahs) in the morning, "buenas tardes" (bway-nahs tar-dezz) from noon to slightly before sundown, and "buenas noches" (bway-nahs no-chezz) after dark.if you ask people to speak spanish VERY SLOWLY ("muy lentamente" -- mooey len-ta-men-tay), they will do so. practically all waiters, shopkeepers, etc., are happy to teach you individual words or phrases. a berlitz book on latin-american spanish (not spain) is helpful, because it has phonetic...

avoiding sexual harassment

by susiemargare

i have rarely been sexually harassed by a mexican man, but perhaps that is due to my age (they think i am a grandmother). on the few occasions when it has happened, i usually act as if we are all teasing each other, and i say something like 'que pillo!' (kay pee-yo, 'what a rascal!').women can forestall a lot of this by smiling (not flirtatiously) and saying 'hi' or 'hola' when a mexican man makes eye contact with them, AND by making eye contact FIRST and then saying 'hi' in a friendly manner.

tipping the hotel maids

by susiemargare

TIP GENEROUSLY, especially the hotel maids, who make in one day about what the minimum wage for one HOUR would be in the united states. i aim for at least two american dollars PER DAY. in addition, i leave the tip BY the day rather than for a week at once, because that way each maid gets a tip for the day she worked in your room, in case there are several different maids throughout the week.

babies and children

by susiemargare

mexicans love babies and children, and most of their babies and children are very well behaved compared to those in the united states. telling a parent how beautiful ("bonita," bone-ee-ta) or handsome ("guapo," gwa-po) their child is acts as a terrific icebreaker on buses. so does asking how many children a person has; this is not considered rude, and taxi drivers (who are all men) will respond to it too.
