show respect during church services

by susiemargare

do not go into churches during services unless you are dressed fairly conservatively. for women, this means arms covered. for men, it means no tank tops. for both, it means no beach wear, no short shorts. do not take photos or carry on conversations during services.

be prepared to shake hands a lot

by susiemargare

most mexicans are very friendly. the women are more shy than the men. mexican men especially will want to shake hands with you when they meet you or if they talk with you for very long. there is A LOT of handshaking, both hello and goodbye.

Beyond the Spanish language classroom

by melosh

There are dozens of things you can do to add to your Spanish speaking experience at low cost. For example: you can watch plays or programs for children, join a Spanish speaking guided tour of a museum, go to a high class technical fair or exhibition, spend hours reading the Spanish language labels in a small museum or large grocery store, attend a sporting event in the cheap seats, learn the words to songs, or see wrestling or the bullfights or a charreada . . .Look to join Spanish speaking groups for camping or other excursions. The key is to avoid English and English speakers like a plague. One problem with language schools is that they do concentrate together people who do not speak the language. It is natural to make friends with these students, but this is counter-productive if you do not speak to each other in Spanish. Some language schools offer special programs designed to help you...

Victoria Cerveza

by AcornMan

Mexican beers such as Corona, Modelo, Tecate, and Pacifio are widely available in the US, but frankly most of these are pretty nasty without a big chunk of lime in them to add flavor and mask the real flavor of the beer. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover Victoria beer on my most recent trip to Mexico. It tastes great right out of the bottle without adding anything to it. It's harder to find than the more common beers I listed above, but it's well worth seeking out.

Small Change & Bills

by AnnaLupilla

When you go to an ATM machine or exchange your money into pesos, there is a slight chance, that you will get $200 or $500 bills. If you are travelling into the countryside or small coastal villages, we recommend you to get some small change and bills before you leave, 1, 2, 5 and 10 peso coins, as well as some 20 and 50 peso bills. Receiving a 100 or 200 peso bill can throw a small vendor into a mess, as they probably won't have change.

Tipping

by AnnaLupilla

Mexican wages are very lo‚—. Food servers, hotel maids, etc. count on their tips. In restaurants, 15% is a fair tip; hotel maids receive a dollar per day of your stay. Strolling trios should receive about 50 pesos for three songs. Gas station attendants, "car watchers" (the guys who "help" you in and out of your parking space) and the bag boys in the grocery stores also receive tips, give them five or six pesos. Also tip the people who guid you around archeological zones and vaces, this is the only income. You can tip them between 30 and 100 pesos depending on the time and quality put into their work. Service here in Mexico is fairly good, and people really depend on what you give them, due to very low incomes, so please mind their situation and remember: the better the service, the better the tip! You won't starve of five to ten pesos more or less.

Immigration

by AnnaLupilla

Visitors are welcome to stay in Mexico for up to 180 days. A tourist card with up to 90 days will be given on arrival. For longer stays go to local migration offices. They will give you a form that you take to the next bank, pay 150 pesos, get the form stamped and then get back to migration, and they will give you the extension. Maybe they want to see your return ticket and proof of you being able to support yourself during your stay.

New Faces of Hope and Love

by Carolyn21

What I liked most about Mexico is the selfless acts they do for their famililes. The American culture is all consumed with best food flavers, brand name clothing, entertainment, and many other selfish desires...But many of the poor families in Mexico see what is really important in life-their family... I met a family of two little girls and their parents, who were living in a shack smaller then my bedroom with their kitchen and bed. The shack was filled with spiders, wroughting wood, cracks, and no light. It was pitch dark even at noon. The children had no shoes and were playing with spiders. The parents shared with us how the whole family had to fast for almost a week to save enough money to buy a sheet so they could hold the shack together without nails or a hammer. But inspite of their hardships and trials, they were always smiling-because they have what is most important-love,...
