Lanuage barrier...not here!

English is widely spoken here, and most of the signs are in English as well. Just about everything here is more expensive than just about anywhere else in the area. But if you are looking to have a great and memoriable vacation, it's worth every penny.

Taco Index

by Enzyme_X

CPI (consumer price index) shows the general costs of living in certain place. In general you could use McD's Big Mac to comapare places all over the world (you can find it almost everywhere, it's made of local ingredients). So, the differnce of the Big MAc price in a way shows differnce in all cost of living.Well, in Mexico insted of Big MAc you can use tacos. And, yes, it indicates the price differneces. Anybody wonders that the most expensive tacos were in Cancun and center of Mexico City? On the other hand, the cheapest were in San Cristobal De Las Casas. And the best in Palenque ;-)

Chosing a language school--issues to consider

by melosh

If you have decided to learn or improve your Spanish using a language school, you have to consider several issues: 1. How important and how many college credits can and do you want to earn? (And perhaps how much extra you are willing to pay for them?) 2. What type of classroom situation do you want? one on one, very small groups 2-6, larger groups 7 to more. 3. What type of educational methods appeal to you? 4. How much school centered activity interests you? (Some schools offer pottery, dance, and guided visits, etc.) A few offer special connections with Mexican students learning English with whom you can exchange help. 5. What type of location or locations would you like? This includes consideration of climate, size, culture, attractions and percentage of tourists to local population. 6. What type of living situation are you willing to try? 7. How much time and money can you commit...

Money money money

by Vikingvicki

I didn't have any problems with my tactic of only having my credit card and Maestro card with me. Even in the smaller places ( OK not tiny village, but small towns) there was always at least a couple of ATM machines. So as long as you plan ahead you'll be fine.I know travellers checks might be a safe option but then you may have to queue up ( impatient woman here)& are reliant on bank opening hours & I did hear from one guy I met who had VISA travellers cheques that he had problems getting them cashed in banks in Mexico City. But he may ofcourse just have been unlucky & it's not my personal experience.

best materials for a quickie guide to mexico

by susiemargare

unquestionably, the best contemporary guide to mexico is THE PEOPLE'S GUIDE TO MEXICO, by carl franz (see his website also, at "www.peoplesguide.com"). he covers both rural and urban travel and has millions of good cultural tips, along with hilarious anecdotes about him, his wife/girlfriend, and their best friend steve on car trips through mexico. if you look at only one source of information about mexico before you go, this should be the one! an excellent general history (and not boring) of mexico is DISTANT NEIGHBORS by alan riding.

Mexico and Margaritas

by TrueGemini

I love Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, and cancun. Cabo being my favorite because it is the perfect blend of desert and ocean. I love that place. Cancun has some of the softest beaches I have known with amazing nightlife and water sport activities. Acapulco is a beautiful place with lots to do but the beaches are not as spectacular on the pacific side of Mexico as they are on the Gulf side. My fondest memory of Mexico has to be the girl who caught my eye in Ensanada at the Lobster restaurant. I will never forget her.

Mexico

by Enzyme_X

Where does the name Mexico come from? Mexica was the other name for Aztec people. At the time of the spanish arrival, the Aztecs were the dominant nation in this part of the World. The Spanis firt renamed the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlam into Ciudad De Mexico. And after the independence, Mexico became the name for the country.

Souvenirs

by Stroller

While in TEOTIHUACAN, you might be taken to a workshop/stores first before you actually set your foot on the pyramids if you have chosen to join a tour group. The idea of showing you the workshop is for nothing but helping you spend your money. My suggestion is, don't buy anything there. While strolling along the Avenue of the death, you'll encounter many clinging vendors. My advice again, don't buy anything from them. You'll find many shops near the exit gates where choices are diverse and offers are cheaper.

Travel info from the hostel in Mexico City

by Stroller

It's not very easy to find someone on the street who speaks English. If you need some information, you can try the hostel near the famous Zocalo square, the very centre of the old town of Mexico city.

Earn Spanish Credit

by melosh

Mexico is a great place to learn Spanish. The people both are friendly and encouraging. If you intend to obtain college credit for your Spanish study make sure to arrange this before you go. It is next to impossible to get after the fact. One of my sons got 12 credit hours for 2 months in Sucre, Bolivia without having to pay his US school for the credits, whereas my other son got none (from a different US school) at least partly because he requested it after completion. The larger Spanish language schools like Don Quijote usually offer help to students to qualify for credits. Some have arrangements with US schools (I recall one in Seattle) for transferable credits. Usually this adds to the cost, but maybe you can be lucky like my youngest son. He has learned Spanish and saved his old man both tuition and living costs. One of many memories: On my second day in Pachuca, a carload of...
