I always find it more interesting to try & see as much of the old Mexico as possible and not just stay in the tourist areas. For example, the cab trip from the airport to the hotels in Mazatlan takes you right through the center of town. There you can really see how most of the locals live. It can really be an eye opener.

Acapulco has lost some of its luster over the years, it used to be the premier resort town in Mexico. It still has one of the most beautiful bays in all of Mexico, as well as great hotels with some great nightlife.

Take a boat from Ensenada, Baja on a big swell day to a remote 'break' off the coast called Todos Santos. The locals will know where to take you. The fishman will be happy to take you out but make sure you have a dependable ride back to mainland. The trip takes about 1 hour by boat.

Xel-ha National Park: An amazing natural phenomenon of coves, inlets and lagoons resulting in a 10-acre natural aquarium feed by both the ocean and subteranean freshwater springs. The fish are very friendly and actually swim up to you. Snorkeling is a must. You can also take the lazy way through this +2 1/2 mile river with a tube.

  • Go to the farthest beach at the southern tip, just past the light house, right at the corner of the road that leads you back up north. The beach there is full of hugh rocks creating small areas to lie in the water, between the rocks. The waves are not strong, the water is only a few inches deep. Very private and quiet.

when visiting mexico ask your self am i visiting mexico or going to a resort place such as cancun which is'nt really true mexico .you have to venture off the beaten track to see the real mexico ,places such as san miguel four hours from mexico city, when i visited puerta i took a bus to basically no where and found a small town where children bathed using buckets of water as they had no showers there the town seemeed to be like going a hundred years back in time yet this was only 30 minutes from five star hotels.in tulancingo you could watch a movie for just 1.20 us .mexico to me and i did five star hotels is the simple life and the people not the tourist areas which dont get me wrong are great as well but the real mexico will grab you heart and leave great memories .the music the povety the poetry the faces of the people .mexico is a land of beauty, uglyiness and everything else in between.if i never go again i will always have it in my heart.

it took all day to find this place and we arrived as it was closing for the day.
llucky the park attendent took a bribe and let us in .
I took both these pics .
Tula as I think it's known is situated near the town of Tula allende in the state of Hidalgo ,which was the state I spent most of my stay in mexico.
Its about 6o km from mexico city and from tulancingo it took for ever cause we got lost.
its about 45 mins from pachuca the lagest city of the state.
Some of the aztec ruins date back to the 13th century.
Despite taking half a day to find this place it is truely worth while.
must warn you though there are plenty of hawkers trying to sell you stuff and they are determined .As we got there they were all packing up shop ,funniest memory was them seeing me and all opening up again.
They must have thought I was arich american ,how wrong on both accounts.
still I parted with a little hard earned aussie bucks and now have some genuine fake relics lol.

  • Go ahead and barter with the pedlars. They're decent folk and are a wealth of knowledge if treated fairly.

  • When visiting Mexico most people forget about the great golf courses. If you enjoy the game of golf don't forget to bring your clubs. The courses are amazing....right next to the beach. If you plan a trip in the month of February there is great whale watching. This is a busy time for Cabo.
