by Masteve Mitla. A small village near Oaxaca. It's famous for it's Mayan mosaics, but in my opinion local church is more interesting. Don't miss tasting mezcal when in Mitla! Leave a Comment

Olmec Head by roamer61 The town of Villahermosa in the state of Tabasco isn't on many peoples itinerary. I recommend it though because of La Venta Park. Here, monuments of the ancient Olmec People are displayed in an open air museum that is designed to make you feel like yo're walking through the jungle. Monuments hi-lighted by the giant stone heads abound. It give you a clear picture of the skills of these ancient people who lived in the region during the period 1200-400 B.C., the oldest in Mexico. Additional information can be obtained from the State of Tabasco Tourism Office or literature on the area.

An experience that almost all of the thousands of Cancun tourists miss is a visit to the actual city. Most visitors do not venture out of the Hotel Zone of the island. However, there is a large, bustling city on the mainland located northwest of the Hotel Zone. The people are very nice and you can get away from the exhorbitant restaurant prices on the island. I've had some great meals at quaint sidewalk cafes where the restaurant owner genuinely seems happy to serve you. It is quite a sight to sit and enjoy some true Mexican food and watch all of the local families wandering through the downtown and simply enjoying being out together. Be smart and don't flash a lot of cash - just like you wouldn't do in an American city. But don't be too apprehensive. After we got used to being the only Americans around and realized how nice the people are, we felt safer than we would in the downtown area of a similar sized American city. Keep in mind that this is more of a 'Mexican environment' (catering to locals rather than trying to attract tourists) and if you aren't interested in that then you would be better off spending all of your time in the Hotel Zone.

by aaron611 Isla Mujeres is an island isolated off the north coast of Cancun and has a distinctively different flavor. Things are a lot more laid back here and you can get a cheap meal at a Ma & Pa type cafe in the village. The north beach is beautiful, still water and pretty quiet and serene but you will probably have a few people trying to sell you something since it is a public beach (a little boy was trying to sell me a small barracuda which he was holding by the eyes - I could just imagine me taking it through customs after it had been dead 3 days). Isla Mujeres is accessed by a ferry (approximately $10) or you can take one of the nightly booze cruises if you would rather just party your derrier off on an Isla Mujeres beach than actually see any of the island.

by wbozic BOLA DE ORO, This is a coffee place, located on Carrillo Puerto #5, City of Jalapa, State of Vera Cruz, CP 91000. It is in a narrow building on a somewhat busy street in the center part of the city. The coffee is freshly roasted for you. There are free samples, too. This is a take-out place, but you can stand by the side and enjoy a strong but smooth fresh cup, then place your order. This location can get crowded at times. We just discovered at the intersection of Hidalgo and Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas TEL: 01 (87) 12-10-67 a store called Cafe de Exportacion which features Bola de Oro. The store is hard to find and almost unmarked. No free samples here.

Tampico, Tamaulipas: In the colonia (subdivision) 'las Flores' there is a pyramid. This is a real surprise, as it is in residential area and there is little or no publicity.

traveled to Puerta Viarta which is a beautiful city and probably less commercial than others.

Taxco Taxco is an old silver mining town and THE place to go if you want to buy any silver. Situated on the side of a hill the delightful streets twist and turn making it easy to get lost. However Taxco is small and it won't be long before you're back on familiar ground. Taxco is about 3 hours from Mexico City by bus and worth an overnight stop. Leave a Comment
