Mexican Colonial Art Extravaganza

by vaticanus

It's located at the convent of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe , a national monument just south of the fascinating city of ZACATECAS. The former convent contains an exceptional collection of colonial art including a 24 canvas cycle of the life of St Francis by Antonio de Oliva (1752). Also, the Last Supper by Antonio de Torres. Other works are by Miguel Cabrera and Nicolas Rodrigues Juarez. Colonial sculpture and furniture are also exhibted. There is a library with a collection of rare hand-printed books. The dramatic Baroque style was meant to undermine the dryness of Protestantism by appealing to religious emotion. This nearly cartoonish scene of the guards throwing dice for the robe of Jesus emphasizes their fallen bestiality and the wounded compassion of Christ.

Sleep on the beach, locals take care of you!

by bluejack

If you're looking for the most awesome experience of your life, get yourself to Mexico, hop on a bus towards the white port city of Veracruz. After a few days of colonial splendour and tropical nights dancing to the coolest Trios and Marimaba sounds, head towards the more secluded beach areas. Ask locals on the way for directions to the beach. As you get further away from city limits, stick to the coast line and where you see signs (usually old, semi legible) that say "playa" follow them and you will probably end up on a pretty deserted beach, where locals will approach you (you'll need to understand and speak some Spanish) and offer you accommodation on "their beach", under a "palapa" (palmleaf-roofed, four pillared concoction) with hammocks. They'll bring you freshly caught and cooked fish, coconuts, the sweetest pineapples ever, and cold beers...daily!!! You'll get to sleep on the...

Chacahua's...lagoon

by josecarlos

Not so far from Puerto Escondido there is a marvelous beach called Cerro Hermoso (Pretty Hill), next to the well-known Chacahua's lagoon... I won't tell you that this place is like that Di Caprio's film "The Beach", but it is, I can assure you, a place where you can stay out of modernity, where there are no hotels or resorts. Just 10 kms. of virgin beaches, with warm and calmed water, just like a natural swimming pool. You can eat shrimps for nothing (10 big shrimps with garlic and sauce for 3 dollars...), while having a cold beer or a coconut. There's nothing else, except some cabins and rustic bathrooms for those who have a tent and like to do some camping...In the night, you cannot see more than 60 people (sometimes more if you go on high season). Playing guitar by the fire, singing, talking under the moonlight which reflects for hours on the sea....My favorite place... thanks god I...

Visit Cafe Museo Cafe in San cristobal, Chiapas

by manil51

Cafe Museo Cafe - Chiapas is one of Mexico's - and the world's - premier coffee growing region; and this cafe-museum is run by Coopcafe, a group of small-scale growers in Chiapas. The museum provides a history of coffee and coffee-growing; and the cafe offers the opportunity to taste the genuine article - pure, delicious organic Chiapas coffee. Don't miss it.

Great hidden beach!!

by taryn21

There's a great beach, less than 30 mins north of PV called Punta Mita. Hard to find though, since you have to drive down a very steep, rocky path to get to it. But it's worth it! Almost no people, amazing views, and gorgeous seashells!!

Labna

by roamer61

Labna is one of several small, yet fascinating, sites in the Yucatan that is off the usual tourist path. Dating from the Classic Period (600-900 A.D.), one can see the Palace and the Great Arch, seen here in the photo. It is easily reached by road from either Merida, Chicen Itza or Uxmal.

Isla Holbox

by harmlessphil

lovely unspolit island much like a small Belizean Caye. Flamingoes and whale sharks in the summer. White beaches. warm sea, cheap beer and food. Try posada Mawimbi on the beach at the north east part of the town/village. About $mex 350-450 for a bit of luxury. www.mawimbi.com.mx

Costa Maya

by iam1wthee

This is one of the cheaper ports on the Atlantic coast. There is parasailing and a number of water sports to participate in. You can find a lot of bargains here as well. Go to the port and see the stage performers dance to various traditional Mexican steps. There are also several Mayan ruins that deserve at least a day to explore for each site.

Sayil

by roamer61

One of several small Mayan sites easily reached by road from Merida or Chichen Itza, it date from the Late Classical Period (700-900 A.D.) The primary structure is the Palace. A great example of Mayan architecture at its height. Note the different levels and pillars as seen in the picture.

Jungle

by micas_pt

Yucatan jungle is not that dense and it doesn't look dangerous, but it gets to a point where every tree look the same so you might find helpful if you travelling with a guide. Anyway, it's a nice place to visit, where you will probably find cenotes were you could bath, find some local fauna and flora. There are several options for visiting jungle: horse, quad moto or 4wd car. We opted for quad moto since it's something we enjoy and that you can drive by yourself unlike 4wd car where someone drives for you.
