mmmm Enchiladas mmmm by madamx Known locally as "Any's" (AH-nees), this place is great for well-prepared traditional Mexican food. Popular with locals, plus a few gringos in the know, Any (the owner) started selling tamales on the street, and it blossomed from there. The decor is open-air with tables covered with cheerful woven tablecoths, and there are plenty of fans to cool you off. The menu is also in english as well. As the name of the restaurant implies, tamales are the specialty, as well as Atole, which is a hot Mexican drink made with basically cornstarch and flavoring, such as chocolate. There are about 20 different tamales on the menu, plus other dishes such as enchiladas and the like.
My husband had the enchiladas, which were very good, and I tried the tamales, which are wrapped in banana leaves, typical of southern locales in Mexico. One was Oaxacan pork in red sauce, and the other was chicken in red sauce, which came with a whole chicken leg steamed in it. Both were fantastic. Portions are huge, and you can easily fill yourself up for about $5.00 US. The only disappointment was the totopos (tortilla chips) that came with our salsas; they seemed old and plasticky. This restaurant is very good value, and the staff are friendly and accomodating. Any's serves breakfast as well and are open from 9 am to 11 pm; they also have a Pozole fiesta night with folkloric dancing (Pozole is a traditional corn hominy and meat stew which is served on Thursdays) every Thursday night and reservations must be made. Tortilla Machine by nepalgoods Tortilla is the food mexican people live of. They eat Totillas with every meal. You can find it even in the soup! Totillas are plain round flat loafs and can be eaten like bread and as a sidedish. Vegetables or meat can be wrapped in Toritllas. Leave a Comment

Green Chorizo by madamx Rick Davis, an American who has lived in Patzcuaro for 20 years, offers some dishes on his menu if you are particularly homesick for burgers, etc., but he also serves a large range of traditional Mexican fare. The restaurant is decorated in cheery colors, and though there are a couple of separate dining rooms, the airy central courtyard is a must. Service is quick and cheerful, with the waiters speaking fairly good English, if you need it. All the veggies here are purified, so if you have a hankering for a big salad, this is the place to have one.
Stopping by for a light lunch, we went along with Rick's recommendation for a selection of green chorizo, chicken, and shrimp quesidillas. They were served with a very fresh salad of iceberg lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and sprouts, plus some salsas and chips. The green chorizo is nicely spiced and delicious. I don't usually go for iceberg lettuce, but at this point, missing my almost daily salads, it went down very well, covered in creamy cucumber dressing. The quesidillas were very well prepared, but not outstanding. Overall, we can't complain about Cha Cha Cha's and would recommend it to others for a good meal. Leave a Comment

Sunset from Amuleto by madamx Amuleto, known as one of the best restaurants in Zihuatanejo, is located in the boutique hotel Amuleto. You can't beat the fantastic sunset views from the restaurant, and it's an extremely romantic place to take your sweetie. Reservations are a must as the restaurant can hold maybe 20 persons max, and you must ring a doorbell to be let in, as the staff monitor who is on the grounds for the safety of the guests. One word: bring a little flashlight. My only complaint is the area is very poorly lit and you can barely see your food. The staff will provide a flashlight, but will sneak it away if someone else needs it.
The menu was designed last year by a visiting French chef, which is evident in the heavy sauces; however, Mexican and local ingredients are cleverly incorporated in each dish. I would describe the meals there as very good, but not on par with a high-end restaurant in New York or San Francisco, maybe a notch lower. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, the only thing I don't recommend is the Dorado. Plus, they will make anything without the sauces, which I found too much for the hot weather. Make sure to have the salad and seared tuna appetizer; we ate it almost every day and it is sublime. The local tuna is fresh daily and marinated in lime juice, olive oil, and other spices, then quickly seared. The filet of beef is a sure bet, but ask for it without the too-rich brie sauce. They do cook it on the rare side, so if you want it medium rare, order it medium. The beef is all angus AAA imported from the US. For lunch, the shrimp tacos will send you over the moon; fresh shrimp in a light red sauce that is served over hand-made corn tortillas. I could eat those morning, noon and night. And for those who like their alcohol, the drinks from the bar are very potent. Tarascan bean soup by madamx Having one of the best restaurants in Patzcuaro, Hotel Posada La Basilica was built in the early 1700's as a hacienda for a Spanish nobleman. Make sure to request the upstairs dining room and come around 6:00 pm as the sun sets; the views of the red tiled roofs and the lake are outstanding. The decor of the restaurant is quite utilitarian and plain, with the food being served on traditional clay dishware. The wait staff have very little english, and the menu is in Spanish, but if you have a good travel dictionary/phrasebook, you shouldn't have a problem. Service was fairly speedy and polite.
You must try the traditional Tarascan bean soup. A recipe used since ancient times, it has great flavor, with avocado and tortilla chips floating in it. We were recommended trying the local grilled cheese, Queso Asada, which you eat wrapped in tortillas, but we found the texture to be like extra firm tofu, and very salty, not something we enjoyed. Our entrees were done very well; I had a Chicken Mole dish, which was very delicious, and hubby had the steak platter. Traditional steak in Mexico is sliced very thin and grilled, not like the thick juicy steaks we are used to. It was a little tough, but flavorful. It came with salad and we were assured by a local that the salads at the restaurant are very safe. by Nanumi There's a stand on I.L. Vallarta as you head towards the Centro where taco is for a buck and once you buy there you have friends for life: they remember your name, greet you, make you feel accepted. Gayo usually hangs out there. Get him a taco, a beer or just be friendly to his little scrawny dog and he'll be your guide or friend there. He is a Huichol Indian born in Sierra Madre, schooled in PV. I suppose schooling reflected on on further developments of Gayo's life: he speaks fairly good English when sober and when not quite sober he tries to guide you through the imagery of Huichol thinking where all is magic. Gayo does not ask for anything - he's happy to keep you company. He's also a key to the local establishment... by BorderHopper La Fachada or Pepe's Restaurante & Bar Of the two restaurants I've listed I like Pepe's the best for its good food and colorful atmosphere. The owner is an artist and displays his colorful, Dali-esque art on the walls of his restaurant.
I have been stopping off at these restaurants for years and I always make it for breakfast. Try any of their traditional Mexican breakfast plates which will surely quell your hunger after the long drive from the US. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: La Fachada is on Blvd. Benito Juarez 317 Playas de Rosarito, B.C., Mexico on the north side of town & Pepe's is further south on the free road (Libre) at KM 29 on the right side of the road to EnsenadOther Contact: Pictured above is my friend Jimm
