Aztec food

by ant1606

In Celaya, north of Mexico City, I had a great dining experience. Unfortunately I can't recall the restaurant name nor the name of the pictured dish. This spicy hot delicacy is of Aztec origins and oven cooked in a traditional lavic stone bowl, the "molcajete". Ingredients are shredded meat - probably beef and pork - cheese, onions, peppers and bread-like crusts. As most Mexican dishes, it's accompanied by nachos and tortillas.Should anyone know the name of this dish, please let me know for future orders....or I must show the picture instead!

Hotel Posada La Basilica

by madamx

Having one of the best restaurants in Patzcuaro, Hotel Posada La Basilica was built in the early 1700's as a hacienda for a Spanish nobleman. Make sure to request the upstairs dining room and come around 6:00 pm as the sun sets; the views of the red tiled roofs and the lake are outstanding. The decor of the restaurant is quite utilitarian and plain, with the food being served on traditional clay dishware. The wait staff have very little english, and the menu is in Spanish, but if you have a good travel dictionary/phrasebook, you shouldn't have a problem. Service was fairly speedy and polite. You must try the traditional Tarascan bean soup. A recipe used since ancient times, it has great flavor, with avocado and tortilla chips floating in it. We were recommended trying the local grilled cheese, Queso Asada, which you eat wrapped in tortillas, but we found the texture to be like extra firm...

Tamales Atole y Any

by madamx

Known locally as "Any's" (AH-nees), this place is great for well-prepared traditional Mexican food. Popular with locals, plus a few gringos in the know, Any (the owner) started selling tamales on the street, and it blossomed from there. The decor is open-air with tables covered with cheerful woven tablecoths, and there are plenty of fans to cool you off. The menu is also in english as well.As the name of the restaurant implies, tamales are the specialty, as well as Atole, which is a hot Mexican drink made with basically cornstarch and flavoring, such as chocolate. There are about 20 different tamales on the menu, plus other dishes such as enchiladas and the like. My husband had the enchiladas, which were very good, and I tried the tamales, which are wrapped in banana leaves, typical of southern locales in Mexico. One was Oaxacan pork in red sauce, and the other was chicken in red sauce,...

Amuleto

by madamx

Amuleto, known as one of the best restaurants in Zihuatanejo, is located in the boutique hotel Amuleto. You can't beat the fantastic sunset views from the restaurant, and it's an extremely romantic place to take your sweetie. Reservations are a must as the restaurant can hold maybe 20 persons max, and you must ring a doorbell to be let in, as the staff monitor who is on the grounds for the safety of the guests. One word: bring a little flashlight. My only complaint is the area is very poorly lit and you can barely see your food. The staff will provide a flashlight, but will sneak it away if someone else needs it. The menu was designed last year by a visiting French chef, which is evident in the heavy sauces; however, Mexican and local ingredients are cleverly incorporated in each dish. I would describe the meals there as very good, but not on par with a high-end restaurant in New York...

Pizza Alfredo: Avoid

by glaiket

Food was terrible. The service was bordering on racist, we ended up setting our own table which is no big thing but with 4 staff standing about, this was after 1/2 hour at the table. They knew it was bad as they tried to slip a "service charge" on our bill. Everyone else in the restaurant did not get this, we checked. Oh. Was the only thing I had that day and had food poisoning the next day. Avoid. None. The food was lousy but everything else was closed. It was New Years day. guess they had a captive audience.

Paying: The bill please!

by AnnaLupilla

Mexican waiters do not automatically bring the bill to the table after you finishing your dining. This would be considered as rude and would look like they are trying to rush you out of the restaurant. So, when the time comes, you want to have your bill, say "Yo quiero la cuenta, por favor".

Cafe Dorina: drunk at 2pm

by lil_traveller

Across from the marina and right along side the strip of restaurants is a nice place that serves good food and good drinks. Our intentions were to just to go and eat lunch. But then we ended up getting lots of drinks on the house which were amazingly strong that I almost couldn't drink it but I did lol. So we were kinda drunk at the end of our meal and the staff there loved us. They remembered our names and every day that we walked by it they yelled our names and stopped us all the time, trying to get us to come in again. I'd go there again.

No hay ...: Mexican Food in General

by AnnaLupilla

The cuisine of Mexico is a fiesta; a celebration of the senses, and a window to a past of conquest, colonisation, revolution and reconciliation. It is the rich aroma of a mole simmering on the stove, the light crispiness of a hot-off-the-comal tortilla, the sweat that goes with grinding corn into dough, the harsh fire of a bad tequila and the smooth lingering smokiness of a good one. It is market vendors singing the virtues of this bunch of onions or that basket of tomatoes. It is the bubble and pop of frzing flautas at a street stall at night and the chatter of the hungry customers. It is the taste of chiles that is sweet.

Las Carnitas: True Mexican Tacos

by mexicoop

This place is unimpressive at first glance but the food is to die for. It is actually a taco stand with a large seating area made up of red Coke chairs and tables. The food is awesome and the guacamloe is the best we have ever eaten! One thing to check out is the Coke is served in bottles!! I haven't drank pop from a bottle in years and had forgotten how much better it is out of glass. The food is fresh and safe to eat. The locals eat here so that says alot. Luis, the owner is one of La Casa Country's finest waiters and a perfect gentleman as well as a very good magician! Their speciality is roast pork tacos in the traditional Mexican style. The pork shoulder is roasted for three hours prior to opening and the portions are huge. Four of us ate until it stuck out our ears and had Cokes(in bottles!) along with the best quacamole salad we have ever eaten for a grand total of $200 pesos...
