Chankanaab National Park

by Florida999

This was my favorite part of the trip! The beach at this place was absolutely beautiful . We went snorkeling and saw reefs and tropical fish right next to the beach. There is also some other rather unexpected things down there , including a Jesus statue, a Virgin Mary, a canon, and some Mayan statues.

Chichen Itza-older part

by Florida999

The Obeservatory and a lot of other structures are located in the "old" part of Chichen Itza. We visited that on our own and had very little time for it, since the tour was about to leave so I don't have any details. If I went back to this place, I would like to have more time and also do it in a cooler month. It was only the start of April, but felt like Florida in August.

Chichen Itza -Temple of Kukulkan

by Florida999

This pyramid is the main attraction of Chichen Itza and one of the world wonders , or so we were told by our tour guide. There is another older pyramid inside of this one. You can't climb on it anymore but it's still interesting to look it. Actually, it was so hot while we were there, I am not sure I would have wanted to climb up it. The pyramid is aligned so the triangles on one corner of it reflect the sun on the day of the winter solstice ( 12/21), and the shadow moves along the edge until it hits the serpent at the bottom. The Mayan calendar ends on 12/21/2012 and many people think that will be the end of the world. Our tour guide told us his idea. He thinks the Mayans were put there by aliens and they will come back on that date to get them. I suppose we shall see. The human sacrifices were done on the top of the pyramid ( there is a chamber there) and the victims were thrown down...

Chichen Itza - a few more buildings

by Florida999

The wall of skulls was used, you guessed it, for more sacrifices....this one the cut off heads of the prisoners of war were stacked up on.The next photo is the warrior temple which our tour guide did not get to in detail . I think the last one is either a head of a serpent or a jaguar both of which are common themes on the structures.

Chichen Itza -Cenote

by Florida999

The Chenote is the "well" , many such water holes exists in the Yucatan. The ground is limestone, which makes this possible. This particular well at Chichen Itza was used to throw the women and child sacrifices into , especially when there was a draught. I don't think I would wish to go swimming in that now !! ( the kids wanted to know if you could do this, but I don't think so) , even if we were told the skeletons had been removed to a museum in Mexico City somewhere....

Tip Photo
Chichen Itza - Ball Court

by Florida999

If you look closely , you might be able to see the small hoop at the center top of the wall. The object of the game was to put the ball through the hoop without using hands. Either the winners or the loosers of the game were sacrificed. It seems most of the structures at Chichen Itza were used for human sacrifices of some sort or another. The Mayans were a bloodthirsty lot it appears! My son thought he spotted some left over ( red) blood, but blood really looks brown when dry, plus it would have washed away long ago. The red was just red paint. The buildings were all painted red originally and they might have used some sort of red beetle to do this.

Tulum

by iwys

Tulum was a Mayan trading port. It is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites. It is compact enough to make a half-day trip to. Its proximity to Cancún and Playa del Carmen has made it a popular destination for tourists. Daily tour buses bring hordes of visitors to the site, making Tulum the third most-visited archaeological site in Mexico, after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza. It is popular for the picturesque cliff-top view of the Caribbean and a location just 128 km south of Cancún. On a calm, sunny day, you can walk down to the beach at the foot of ther cliff and go for a swim. On a windy or rainy day, however, it is not the place to be, as there is very lttle cover.

San Juan Chamula

by iwys

San Juan Chamula is a small town in the state of Chiapas, with a population of around 50,000. Chamula is located in the Chiapas highlands, at an altitude of 2,200 meters. It is inhabited by the indigenous Tzotzil Maya people, whose Tzotzil language is one of the Mayan languages. It is just 10 km from the tourist town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, so it gets a lot of visitors interested in its Mayan culture. The town has a unique autonomous status within Mexico. No outside police or military are allowed in the village. The Chamula Mayas have their own police force. It is a rather scruffy, rough and ready town, the highlights of which are the open-air market, with its colourful umbrellas and the church, with it pine-needle-strewn floor, both of which are on the town square.

San Cristóbal de las Casas

by iwys

San Cristóbal de las Casas is a pretty colonial town and centre of the Zapatista movement, in Mexico's poorest state, Chiapas. The city was named after Bartolomé de Las Casas, a Spanish priest who defended the rights of the indigenous people, and was the first bishop of Chiapas. The town has a population of 142,000 and is compact enough to walk round. It has plenty of hotels, hostels, restaurants and gift shops to cater for the many tourists who come here.
