Tulum

by gazellen

Rent a little cabana and spent some days together with the cristal blue ocean.Wáke up in the morning to the sound of the sleapy waves and enjoy your private ocean view from your cabana. The tulum ruins is just "around the corner" and can be explored by foot.Other trips:Take the bus to the Coba ruins. And take the early morning bus to the Chicken Itza. A must, but do your self the favor to go as early in the morning as possible.

Chichén Itzá

by iwys

The Mayan archaeological site of Chichén Itzá is a UNESCO Wold Heritage Site and in 2007 was named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Highlights of the site include El Castillo, the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, Casa de las Monjas and El Caracol Observatory.Along with Tulum, which is even nearer Cancún , it is the most touristy of the Mayan sites and at times it seems like a Disney-style theme park. Personally I prefer Tikal and Palenque.Opening hours: 9am-5pmAdmission: 95 pesos ($9.50)The ADO bus from Cancún takes about 2hrs 45mins to reach here.

Palenque

by iwys

Palenque is a great Mayan archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage Site. I think it is better than Chichen Itza. It was a Mayan city state from 431 to around 800 AD. Most of the current buildings date from the period 611 to 683 AD in the Late Classic period, when the city was at its height.Highlights include the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace, the Temple of the Cross, Temple of the Sun, and Temple of the Foliated Cross, the Temple of the Count and the Temple of the Red Queen. There is also an excellent museum and jungle trails through the more overgrown parts of the ruins.

coco loco!

by rkearns

coco loco is basically, a coconut filled with liquor. . . so the "milk", or water of the coconut acts as a mixer. it's fresh, delicious, and intoxicating. mostly room temperature, coconut water doesn't taste like anything i can describe. it doesn't taste like coconut, and neither does the meat of the fruit. it's a very mild flavor. there are different appearances of coconuts. in brazil and mexico, they are green and smooth. in hawaii, they are brown and fuzzy. i don't know the difference in flavor. but regardless, yummy with alcohol, especially malibu rum! i hear coconut water is also great for hangovers. but i have never tried that remedy.

going mad in mexico

by smithy65

Excursions. There are 2 towns close by, le cruccietta and santa cruz.use taxi at hotel, very reasonable but tell them what the fare is when you get in for the place you are going. list of fares are on the steps at the hotel. If you get in a taxi and they say you can hire them cheaper for excursions, don't be tempted. we did one day and what a white knuckle ride that was, but thats another story.......... and it is only by the grace of God that we are here to tell the tale anyway.Check out what the other reps are offering in the hotel in the way of excursions as they all use the same company but the prices vary greatly. We zip wired down the mountain, quad biked, went horse riding and the crocs and turtles tour was great. Oh and a big must when you are there, go to la entranga beach and hire a life jacket and snorkelling gear its very cheap, the sea is calm and it is one of the best...

Snorkeling in the Riviera Maya

by ermintrude_moo

You can snorkel out to the reef by yourself if you have the gear. Alternatively there are so many dive shops, I guess it just depends where you're staying for convenience' sake. Have you been to Yalku lagoon in Akumal? That's great for snorkeling. Try Akumal Dive Adventures http://www.akumaldiveadventures.com. Actually I'd say Akumal is probably your best bet for reef snorkeling (it means place of the turtles in Maya). The beaches are beautiful and there are some lovely places to stay and to eat, drink and be merry.Have you been snorkeling in cenotes too? You really should! Hidden Worlds just south of XelHa on the other side of the highway have a selection of absolutely beautiful cenotes on their grounds for snorkeling (stalagmites and stalagtites that will take your breath away), and excellent professional guides, equipment etc. http://www.hiddenworlds.com/ They also have some fabulous...

Lollygagging in the Zocolo!

by Bluefooter

This is an amazing place to get lost for the day. It functions as the cities historical center with the palacio nacional, the metropolitan cathedral, and several museums and galleries right off of avenida reforma. We were fortunate enough to attend Mass on a Sunday morning in the Metro Cathedral and I highly reccomend it to everyone, even non religious types will enjoy the experience simply for experiences sake! We headed north east from there and ended up at the antiguo colegio de san ildefonso which functions as a gallery. Currently they are running an AMAZING exhibit by an artist named Vic Munoz (google him) and it will be running for the rest of the summer. There were also several murals by Rivera and Ortiz. After that we hit up a street side, stand for some roasted corn served with cheese, chile, lime and salt, you can find these carts all over the city and if you see the corn, BUY...

Museo de Frida Kahlo

by manil51

The "Blue House" where Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 and died 47 years later, is both museum and shrine. Kahlo's astounding vitality and originality are reflected in the house, from the giant papier-mâché skeletons outside and the retablos (small religious paintings on tin) on the staircase to the gloriously decorated kitchen and the bric-a-brac in her bedroom. You can admire her early sketches, diary entries, tiny outfits, wheelchair at the easel, plus her four-poster bed conveniently fitted with mirror above. Even if you know nothing about Kahlo, a visit to the museum will leave you with a strong, visceral impression of this pivotal feminist artist. COST: $3 . OPEN: Tues.-Sun. 10-5:45.

guanahuatu

by manil51

Guanajuato is a colonial city that owes its prosperity to the gold and silver mines of the area. Opulent mansions line the main roads curving through the gorge in which it lies, whilst simpler but colorful dwellings sit almost one upon the other on the hillsides. The whole city buzzes with activity from the university students and the influx of visitors, especially around the time of one of the city?s many festivals. In October the world focus is upon Guanajuato as the International Cervantino Festival brings many famous names in the areas of dance, theater and music to the city. To appreciate the atmosphere of the city, chose a hotel in the center of town and stroll the streets at leisure. Be sure to pause for a while in the many small plazas to watch the activity over a meal or a drink. The early evening is the time when young and old alike take to the streets and the air is filled...
