Henna Tattoos

by Martinibird

While enjoying afternoon cocktails we decided it would be fun to get henna tattoos! Each person chose the tattoo and it's location for the person to their left! This was funny because some of us had just met on this trip. We had the artist make some modifications that were not in the book. People had tattoos on their necks, chests, etc... We didn't realize they last up to a week. It was really funny and we all looked ridiculous!

Whale watching on Magdalena Bay

by Blackirish1

Gray Whale-watching off the beaten track on remote Magdalena Bay in Baja. No fancy resorts here. 2-hour drive from nearest major airport (La Paz) to this giant bay on the Pacific Ocean side. Small pangas are the water transportation, setting off at sunrise from one of the handful of small towns nestling the bay. (Our choice was Puerto San Carlos and the Hotel Alcatraz, trying hard & successfully to make the transition from a rudimentary fishermen's stop-off to a more eco-tourist appeal.) Magdalena Bay's appeal is rooted in the babies. Moms bring their newborn into the safety of the Bay to nurture them in their early months. And the mammals' innate curiosity often bring the adults voluntarily to boat-side. The large population in the winter months makes for varied, spectacular viewing experiences.Evening dinner in the courtyard at Hotel Alcatraz is bliss. Owner and staff make sure you are...

Day of the Dead

by melosh

I found the night and days of the dead a most evocative experience. What you experience will vary by location and time; you will have to be selective because you can not see all the variations during one holiday.Suggestions: 1) Plan for several days of the holidays with hotel reservations because this has become a popular long weekend holiday for Mexicans. You are not too late especially if you decide to stay in less recognized towns or in Morelia or the City of Oaxaca. (As you may be aware, reservations for Patzcuaro may be a special challenge.) 2) Take a good long siesta in the afternoon prior to the night of the dead and plan to be out very late into the early morning. 3) Make a plan but keep some flexibility. (For example if you decide to take a tour out of Morelia be prepared to break off and spend extra time at a place you find interesting rather than returning with the bus)...

Fun for all the family - Hidden Worlds Cenote Park

by LittleWagTail

Check out Hidden Worlds Cenote Park - this was such a find - we had a great family day out and it was good value for money. We did their whole day package but I think you can also just do snorkeling and cavern diving tours. On the package we did they take you into the jungle on a sort of home-made truck where you get to do 2 really cool ziplines as many times as you want. One zipline lands you in a beautiful cenote and the other is high up over the jungle – this one really takes your breath away and my kids wanted to do it over and over again! There's also a rappel through the ground into this dream-like cave below where the cenote is. Then you go snorkeling through the cavern with a guide through all these astounding natural rock formations – stalactites, stalagmites and columns and you can see the roots of the trees above. The kids were fascinated and have since got really into geology...

Akumal - Swim with the Turtles!

by Baker10

We went through an environmental organization at our resort (Eco-Bahia).The trip cost a mere $40.00 USD and included a 20 minute boat ride to Akumal (which means “place of the turtles” in Mayan) and 75 minutes to snorkel in the water. We were able to swim with sea Turtles, Barracudas, Stingrays and multiple schools of fish (well over a thousand at some points). You swim through the coral reef with an instructor in a group of 5 or less so it’s a perfect size. The instructor’s are very friendly and well informed. They gladly answer all questions and point out species as soon as they find them. All the while they make sure their Coral reef is protected and the animals are out of harms way; which to someone who’s becoming more eco-friendly, is a great thing to see.

Monte Albán

by Jaaldrich

Raised high above the Valley of Oaxaca (of which there is a beautiful view) are the pre-Columbian ruins of Monte Albán. These famous ruins are the remnants of the Zapotec civilization that existed, and stills exists in Oaxaca. It's a great excursion from the city; I don't know about transportation because we came from the orphanage, but I would highly recommend going. There's also a market in the area where goods can be bartered.

Ajijic - Take a stroll around the old town

by mexicruiser

Early morning or late afternoon are wonderful times to take a stroll around the old town center....everytime I walked past this home, there was a horse tied up outside, but I never had my camera with me. I finally grabbed my camera and made my way over to the home one day, but unfortunately there was no horse...most disappointing! Finally, on our last morning in Ajijic, I decided to take an early stroll with my camera, and was greatly rewarded by not just one horse, but four!! So of course I snapped away to my hearts' content...

Michoacan- fines febrero- Visita de las Mariposas

by estariamaria
