For an evening, we took the...

by Pierre_Rouss

For an evening, we took the train just downtown of San Diego, and went South down to the Mexican border (17 miles) where we took off. We crossed the border on foot to Tijuana, where countless street vendors were waiting for the tourists with souvenirs of all kind : maracas, chest and checkers game in alabaster, jewelry, pottery, nik-naks, etc...A bus could take us to downtown Tijuana. You can tell that this town lives from the handouts of daily tourists from San Diego. Cheap booze (tequila for less than $3), always the same souvenirs in every shops, as you walk on the sideways, you are asked every 10 feet if you want a cab back to the border... pretty annoying. You pass the border back to the states like through a carrousel, they don’t even bother you with your purchases. Of course, they check if you are not a Mexican or if you have one hidden in your bag.

by Sirod

I wonderd very much that (unless around Cancun ) nobody speaks english - really nobody! No stuff at restaurant or hotel... Thats ok, of course, but you should know Spanish more than 'just for traveller' to be abel to relax. Else it's really worse. But else: I had no problems at all. The boys are so nice, feeling so honored, when asking for the way or something else. I'd never been besetted or was worried about anything. There are some beggars ( not so nice when 10 times there will be a hand in your dinner... ) With this 'problem' I hold it like this: I think about this problems (no sozialsystem etc ) before travelling, inform myself and come to a decision. Sometimes it is the only way to servive for some of the people (for a widow for example ) sometimes, each penny makes the situation worse ( for example, when people 'earn' more money by begging than doing farming. What will happen, when...

Beer on Airports, turists...

by cbogdan

Beer on Airports, turists places may be as high as $4. In Cancun asking for water in restaurant, you get bottle, so will have to pay for it.In the same city, when renting car from airport you will have to pay $10 airport fees. You can snorkle for free, if own gear by walking south by the beach from Regina Resort. Be very carefool with your belongings, have belt with yours documents and money. Dont carry everything with you. Keep dokuments and credit cards in safety deposit box- some hotels don't charge for it . Last time my wife was robbed on beach in Puerto Vallarta, while i was snorkeling. Demages were- video camera, picture camera, all documents(passports, credit card, checks etc.)money, hotel and car kays. In this case don't expect a lot of help from hotel(Playa los Arcos) or police. Nobody know what and where.Local phone calls from hotel may cost you $3 each- buy calling card and use...

Cancun, the Zona Hotelera....

by Kaitlin

Cancun, the Zona Hotelera. Everything is dubble price.Don´t buy any Sombreros or other souvenirs along the way if you´re still going to Mexico City. They are much cheaper over there in a place called Ciudadela. It´s close to the center and you´ll find the way by asking: Donde estan los Somberos?....Atleast we did :)

by pmorin

If you are the 'beach kind' you'll meet a bunch of Mexican solding everything they can. T-Shirt, gum, bracelets, hair braces, blanket, EVERYTHING! That kind of annoyed me when I went on the beach... If you say 'No thanks' it's like you just said 'Common' try to convince me, I like it!'

The Mayan Riviera offers may...

by sskulkar

The Mayan Riviera offers may opportunities for tourist tours. Some of these are worthwhile, but many are definite tourist traps. Avoid any sort of jeep tour through the 'jungle', as there is no real jungle and there have been stories about the tour operators being in cahoots with local thieves. Don't bother going horseback riding on the beach, but a snorkelling tour may be worth it. Visit Tulum and Xel-ha to get a good taste of Mayan ruins and beautiful wildlife. Also avoid buying overpriced junk jewellry in places like Cancun or Playa del Carmen - you'd think prices would be reasonable, but are actually outrageous.

by natashaward

Be careful going to the downtown markets. Everyone wants you to come see there stuff. Which will drive you crazy. Don't ever buy at the first price they offer. Make them come down at least to half off.

by Golfgal

In the tourist hot spots, nothing is free. A Mexican will ask if you want your picture taken, then expect you to pay him (usually a man). I fell for the old picture with an iguana around my shoulders.

While Cozumel is a tourist area it didn't seem to be a toursit trap, just an island dedicated to toursits. The costs for diving were very reasonable, and the equipement and staff were up to the industry's standards.

While I'm not one to go on these 'free' trips to listen to a time share salesperson, my motherinlaw is and if you're willing to listen to these yahoos, then go for it - she went on a free fiesta at the Sheraton and had a great time!
