Cuota roads

by melosh

Toll roads (cuota roads) in Mexico are expensive but have less traffic, are better engineered and are better maintained then most other Mexican highways. They may also let you bipass the confusion and delay of entering into every city on your route thus saving a lot of time. I think you can say that traveling the cuota roads can be considered reasonably safe.Still you should prepare yourself by studying Mexican road signs, being sure that your car is in good shape, and buying good Mexican auto insurance (This is a requirement.).You should also prepare yourself mentally for the possibility of being stopped in Mexico. Not all cars with flashing lights carry real policemen and not all policemen in uniform are honest. Do not, if possible, stop at an isolated area --try to pullover at a gas station or store or cuota office where there will be witnesses. Do not allow yourself to be willingly...

Bus or family car to and from the border and DF

by melosh

Is it safe to drive your family in your own private car to and from the Northern border and Mexico City? Safe enough, but I would recommend against making your first vacation to Mexico City a private car road trip:Seeing the countryside at your own pace with the freedom to stop where you want and when you want is certainly an attraction, but even though I love Mexico I would not say that the trip to and from the central border area is very scenic and the coastal routes are only slight more interesting. Most of what you see can be appreciated by bus. The frequency and quality found in the Mexican bus system is probably unsurpassed in the world. (See bus tip.) Traveling with your family for long distances you should restrict yourself to first class, or better, buses. Breaking up the southern and northern trips with stops in colonial towns or towns along the coasts would probably be nice...

Drive into and around Mexico

by cochinjew

I have driven around Mexico but always with a Mexican friend driving. As the previous poster said: I dont think it is a good idea. An average Mexican is as friendly and charming as any one else, but you have to take into consideration the situation on the roads, the attitudes towards gringos, everything is worse if you cant speak spanish fluently, mexico city traffic is horrendous. Drug related violence has spread to even small towns in Mexico. your car with usa number plates would be an invitation once you go deep into Mexico (like the non florida number plates are an invitation in Florida for break in!)you can get to monterrey very easily from Texas. from there you could take deluxe buses or fly cheaply to various places. if you go to merida, you can see all of yucatan, if you go to leon, you can see the architectural colonial heritage, Mexico is an undiscovered gem when it comes to the...

How to find best airfare to Mexico

by gomexico

I haven't found one online booking service, not one, that's ever beaten the fare I've paid for by booking directly with the airline on its website. Airlines often have fare promotions and sales and such events are not typically made available to the online travel agent booking services. Now that you've identified which airlines serve Mazatlan from your community, check the individual websites and keep monitoring them until the point you absolutely have to book your trip.

Bus, taxi, and open air transportaton

by Ed_G

There are main bus routes in Mazatlan defined by color...red, orange yellow and green. Air conditioned busses are P7.40(pesos) and the older un-airconditioned buses are about P4.20(pesos).At the time of our visit the exchange rate was P11.40 per $1.00. Red(Sabalo Centro) primarily travels the hotel distric along the coast athe north and central part of town including Marina Mazatlan, the Golden Zone, The Fisherman Monument, the Market, The Cathedral, and the Historical Center. The Orange line(Sabalo Cocos) takes in portions of the Golden Zone along Ave. Camaron Sabalo, the Gigante Supermarket, the Bull Ring, Walmart , the Cathedral, and the Market. The yellow line (Urias Sabalo) travels up and down Sabalo Avenue, to the Gigante Supermarket, the Bullring, Colosio Avenue, El Jardin Cenetary, and Urias Suburb. Cerritos Juarez (the green line) travels down Cerritos Avenue, Sabalo Avenue, the...

traveling from city to city by bus

by leigh767

when traveling from city to city in Mexico, always take a first-class bus by major companies such as ADO and OCC. It is true what they say-- first cost buses in Mexico are more comfortable than Greyhound/shortline etc in the USA. avoid traveling at night whenever possible. You when taking long journeys such as from Oaxaca to San Cristobal (11 hours) only night buses are offered. You'll have to check in almost all your luggage and everyone on the bus will be videotaped.when crossing the border from Palenque to Cancun, you will be asked to stop at a checkpoint for the police to search through the bus and, occasionally, the luggage.also, some sources say that customers are roughly USD6.50 per hour of travel. however I have only found this to be true for the Mexico City to Oaxaca leg. below is a brief breakdown off bus fares between major tourist cities.Oaxaca to San Cristobal (11 hours):...

Bus Tour- principales puntos turísticos del D.F.

by estariamaria

Crazy Driving in Mexico

by olgaehr

So my husband and I decided to be clever and save some money on just renting a car and skipping all the silly tourist buses and do it all on our own.First of all, renting a car in Mexico is not cheap with insurance; they do not accept any American insurances that you might have.Second, rental cars in Mexico do not have license plates. Instead they have a piece of paper taped on the back window which obviously screams "hey i am gringo pull me over please".Third, chances are you will get pulled over. No offense to Mexican law, but the cops there are corrupt. Everyone I know who drove in Mexico got pulled over at least once. And guess what we got pulled over too. Well we were stupid enough to run the stop sign in the heart of the tourist zone, and of course our Spanish was "awesome" to communicate with the cop who did not know English (yeah right). So $60 was good enough bribe him. Fourth,...

Metro

by ArenJo

This is the cheapest subway station in the world. The signs are clearly marked and locals are very helpful to lost tourists. The bad points: At time it gets extremely crowded and police ever stand by to stop rioting. There are a lot of stairs to go up and down.

Adventure bus travel

by melosh

I usually do not recommend car rental by tourists to Mexico (see prior tip) because of the costs, potential hassles, inconvenience and risks. Instead, I recommend the luxury and first class buses commonly available for long trips, but I have made an exception at times for travel in the Yucatan because of the sparse population (fewer local buses available), relatively good driving conditions on roads and highways, and the presence of lots of small places to visit during a journey. In either cases, you should recognize that when you decide to rent a car or take a luxury first class bus you are also deciding to skip what might prove to be a memorable Mexican experience beyond that enjoyed by most tourists. Second and third class buses may leave something to be desired in the way of cleanliness and comfort, and safety might be a serious consideration on mountain roads, but for a short trip...
