Reasons not to rent a car

by melosh

1. Car rental and insurance is more expensive in Mexico than in the US. (You are required to have Mexican insurance --if you are in an accident it might keep you out of jail.) 2. Road conditions are often dangerous, especially at night. (Example: Cars without lights or animals stopped on the highway.)3. There are different traffic rules and more importantly different rules of the road. Caution is not enough! 4. Driving a car can carry you into the hands of corrupt police. (See 'la mordida' tip.) or more rarely in the hands of highway bandits.5. Injury accidents can mean all parties are placed in jail until "justice" runs its course.6. Parking is usually a problem, and will tend to limit your hotel choice.7. Theft and collisions can cost alot of money8. Driving in a car isolates you from the Mexican people.9. Bus transportation is convenient, inexpensive and can take you to almost all...

Mexicana Air

by chipsbc

Mexicanna Air lost our bag on the flight to Los Cabos. The agent could not be found and I had to search for him to complete the lost baggage form. I spent the next four days trying to get someone on the phone to give us information on the bag. The desk at our time share continued to phone and finally the bag was found and delivered. I am used to at least an overnight kit when a bag is delayed but Mexicanna refused anything. We got our bag and filed a claim when we got home. They promised a 48 hr. response. At the end of the week, we claimed part of our expenses on our insurance. A month later, we got a letter with an offer if we sent the original documents that we had faxed. I wrote back to explain, the originals were sent to the insurance company and I requested a goodwill payment to cover some of the things that the insurance does does not cover. Mexicanna did not reply. After a month,...

Renting a car with driver

by melosh

If you wish to have the freedom and efficiency of a car for a day trip you should consider doing something you would not think of doing in your home country: hire a "taxi" for the day. Of course, this is likely to cost a bit more that getting your own rental car for a day, but not as much as you might think with a lot less hassle. Your hotel might be able to arrange it with someone they know, or you can just make the deal yourself. Expect to have to bargain for the right price. For just a few dollars more you get freedom from liability, a Mexican roadwise driver, a release from parking difficulties, and perhaps a little free guidance as to where to eat authentic food or what extra little thing to see. If you have more money, I guess you could consider hiring a private car and guide through a travel agency. I am too cheap for this option.

Bamba Experience around Mexico

by psarfati

You should check out the best for of transportation for travellers: backpackers and independent travelers in Mexico called Bamba Experience. They offer off the beaten path travel with vans for 13 people. It's great because you get to meet tons of people from all over the world, and they take you to some places that I had never heard before and are not even in the Lonely Planet. They have the route that is recommended by the Lonely Planet from Mexico City to Cancun going to the Pacific Ocean, Chiapas, and up to the Riviera Maya all the way to Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. I highly recommend using this service: www.bambaexperience.com.They take you to a beach called Bamba Backpacker's paradise, when I went there it was amazing since there is lagoon in the middle where you can swim and there is plankton all over the place. They also took me to secluded waterfalls, deserts,...

Taxis

by madamx

Taxis are very plentiful in Mexico; they are non-metered, so make sure you agree on a price when you get in. Find out what the official taxis look like in the town, for safety purposes. At the airport, the taxis are regulated, and DO NOT go with anyone promising a cheaper ride or free ride; this will bring you trouble as it's a safety issue as well as you don't want to spend 3 hours sitting at a time-share meeting. Do some research with guide books to find out where the taxi desk is at the airport and how much to approximately pay.Taxis will take you anywhere -- for a price. If travelling form town to town, ask about tolls and if they are included or not. If you can, take the toll highways as they are significantly faster, much safer and in better repair. If travelling long distances on the highways, always do so during the day if you are in a cab. Also, air conditioning usually raises...

Rent a car in Merida

by fgfi

I found Europcar to have the cheapest rates. I confirmed the rent via email, and due to the fact that they charge your card instanctly you can save some money. You can take the car in one place and get it back in another. Not every rent a car company use allow to do that.Europcar office is not at the airport in Merida. If you give exact time of arrival they will wait for you there with the car. The same when you take the car back.

BUSES-camiones- ever thought how a sardine feels?

by PolishChick

Surprise surprise....this metal cans DO funcion and DO carry people around! And every trip has spicing up your life as a goal....you never know if this time it will me the "construct it yourself" kind of bus where you actually have to take care of your own sit and fix it, the "I have a hole in the floor" kind of bus or "I`m in pieces but I still look like one" kind. Drivers that stop to have a chat with a buddy that`s passing by shouldn`t surprise you, neither the LACK of actual bus stops- they stop on every corner or if you signal it with your hand. The fun part is figuring out WHERE they actually go- they don`t have numbers, neither they have a sheduele- you supposedly know where they go by the name at the front, which suggests the name of the suburb, but really- who knows....there is no official map by the way. So if you don`t fall in the hole in the floor and are be able to survive...

Renting a car is best way to get around

by dln6874

If you're going to go to several different places in close proximity (within a few hours drive), renting a car is the best way to go. Otherwise, you'll be stuck trying to catch buses that doesn't necessary go to places you want to go. Or, you can take tours, but they tend to be overpriced and will not give you the flexibility that car will give you. You can get a compact car for ~$200 per week, including taxes & mandatory insurance. Booking on-line may be the cheapest. Just beware, the prices quoted in USD will actually be charged to your credit card in Mexican pesos, and they will not give you a favorable exchange rate. CDW can be waived, but there is a $5 per day liability insurance that is required in Mexico that is not included in the price quoted on-line.
