Otisa Tour operator

by spalatino

The best way to see places around San Cristobal de las Casas or continue to Guatemala is to contact one tour operator. We were lucky to find OTISA. Very friendly stuff, the owner (Juan Carlos) speaks perfect english, tours very well organized. The office is easy to find, just 100 m from the Zocalo, address and all other informations to be found at their homepage.Address: Real de Guadalupe No. 3-C San Cristobal de las CasasMaybe easy to organize excursions around San Cristobal, but also my transfer to Guatemala was excelent.

When to buy your bus ticket in Mexico

by melosh

Generally if you are not travelling on a special holiday you will be able to buy tickets just by turning up at the bus station. I have done this for years, but I guess you are running a slight risk of encountering a sold out bus. It is helpful to be able to ask at the station when you arrive if there could be a problem getting a place on the next bus you plan to take. Buying your ticket at the bus station or a centrally located bus ticket sales office in advance does decrease the time you need to plan to be at the station. Another advantage of early ticket purchase is that you should be able chose your seats. Seats between the front and back wheels give a smoother ride. In some buses front seats give you a view of the road but may be more dangerous. If there is no bathroom, there tends to be less passenger moviment in the back of the bus. If there is a bathroom you would certainly not...

Military Checkpoints

by AnnaLupilla

As you travel in México, you may come to military checkpoints. There they are looking for drugs, weapons and contraband. Usually they do not stop tourists, but they may. If they do so, you should be very polite and respectful and keep in mind that they are only doing their job.

Mexico's bus network

by elgarbo

On our adventure from Mexico City to Cancun, we became fairly accustomed to Mexico's intricate bus network, and found it to be a highly satisfactory experience. We had very minimal Spanish ability, however the entire process was entirely straightforward, even when we couldn't find anyone to deal with in English. On our trip, we had to use both first and second classes of bus. First class buses are certainly reccommended, especially for longer trips - they travel directly to your destination with only a couple of scheduled stops along the way.Second class buses, on the other hand, are what you would call an 'experience.' Stopping off at every town along the way, dropping people off, picking others up, all without the luxury of air conditioning or luxury seating. Buskers climb aboard and strum their guitar looking for a few spare pesos. Children alight offering ice creams and fruit juice to...

Best airport tranfer in the world?

by melosh

If you are arriving by plane in Mexico City you can often avoid the city and the struggle to get to one of the main bus stations by taking an express bus from curbside in front of the national section of the airport. (For many years it has been about a hundred and fifty yards to your left from the customs exit in front of the national part of the terminal, but one VT member wrote that it had been moved although it was still right at hand.) Buses go to Puebla, Queretaro, Pachuca and a few other cities. For example, the bus (Estrella Roja) to Puebla costs about 250 pesos (Price updated 9/20/2005 as per VT member Reynald.) and leaves every half hour. (One quirk about the buses to Puebla is that they alternately arrive at the main Puebla bus station (CAPU) or at a special small station (4 Poniente). The poniente station is a few minutes closer by taxi to the main plaza then the CAPU station....

Be careful when driving at night

When traveling at night in some of the "middle of no-where" spots in Mexico, keep an eye out for livestock and other animals that like to sleep on the warm alphalt of the road. Always bring extra gas and water.

Long distance busses

by Vikingvicki

The bus system in Mexico is brilliant. There are 1st and second class busses ( normally leaving from 2 different stations). You can either just turn up at the station and buy your ticket, about 30mins before departure, or if you want to be sure of a seat then you can book either over the internet ( although if you book a seat you have to collect the ticekt 2hrs before departure) or book your ticket at a travel agency or at a Ticketbus office ( yellow & black signs). You can also get on second class busses at other places than the bus stations, you just pay on board. You get to choose your own seat on the 1st class busses, there is plenty of leg room ( I'm 1.80m and I could fit my legs in with no problems, even on 2nd class busses). They are also incredibly punctual !Second class busses normally stop at various places enroute, this is not so bad for short trips as vendors will come up to the...

The Mayan Route

by Waxbag

Here is the loop of central America I took going through Lago Atitlan, Antigua, Tikal and Belize back to Mexico. The whole trip took about 3 weeks:The best way to go Antigua from Mexico is by San Cristobal de Las Casas. You can get a bus to Ciudad Cuauhtemoc on the boarder and cross into La Mesilla, Guatemala. Once in Guatemala you have to take about 6 chicken buses to Panajachel which is on lago Atitlan (gorgeous lake). It is not to difficult to do as the people are increadibly friendly, but it is quite an adventure. Once at the lake get a taxi to San Pedro on the other side as it is far nicer than touristy Panajachel. From the lake you can take a bus to Antigua the colonial capital and from there a taxi to the main bus station in Guatemala City. From Guatemala city you can take a bus to Flores which is the Peten about 3 hours south of Tikal (this is an over night bus). From here Flores...

Where To?

by Enzyme_X

Mexico has a superb transport system. Some kind of a transportation is driving to every corner of a country. Buses, Microbuses, comibies, colectivos, taxis are the possibilitys. For longer distances take 1. class buses (seats better than in airplane), for shortet distances other options. Exepct taxis: try to avoid them. They are very expensive compared to others

Take a plane

by Maria_75

Mexico is a very big country, and if you plan to do a lot of travelling you should consider taking a plane at least once. The price on routes that are highly trafficated can be quite cheap. But if you want to take a route which is not as popular, you might have to pay a lot more. Anyway you should check out the price if you are going to travel long distances. If it's a little bit more expencive it might be a good choice when you think about the time you save. Plus sleeping on overnightbuses can sometimes be a bit difficult.
