Take the bus

by Maria_75

Taking the bus in Mexico is both cheap and efficient. There are lots of different companies that drives all over the country. You can take everything from expencive deluxe buses to cheap, bumpy "chickenbuses".If you plan on covering a long distance by overnight bus it might be better to pay a little bit more for a first-class bus. They don't always go direct, but they have just a few stops. The second-class and other buses stops at every corner, and people come and go all the time, which makes it very difficult to sleep. All of the first-class buses, and many second-class, have both TV and air condition. Normally they show an old american movie with spanish subtitles.

Flying to Mexico

I came to Mexico from Japan. I came on a Korean Airlines flight (via Seoul) to LA. From there I flew into Mexico City on Mexicana Airlines. If I go again I think I will fly to a smaller airport and avoid Mexico City.

The toll highways of Mexico

by rmdw

Mexico is full of toll highways, also known as "cuotas" or "autopistas". I much prefer driving on these than the secondary roads as they're well built and maintained. Tolls along the way range from 35 pesos to 120 pesos but don't be surprised to have to pay several tolls between two major centres.Signage along the highways is another matter. It is ***-poor and most certainly not designed by any of my fellow engineers. When travelling in Mexico make sure you have a good map!

Bus travel in Mexico

by ktduncan

When buying tickets for the bus tell the operator that you want the front row. The front row has more leg room, you don't have to woory about the person in front of you reclining their chair, and distant from the bathroom which means that you'll avoid any foul smells and won't have people bumping into your charge as they walk down the aisle.

second class buses

by margaux

They offer almost the same services as the first class, but travel more often, stop everywhere and are much cheaper.Ok, they are less fast and sometimes a bit old, but they mostly have toilets, airco and seats that can move. They also do not have the irritatinf TV with too loud noise, so that one can sleep if tired! And in a bus you see so much of the landscape and culture of the country, without having to drive and watch out for all the toppes.

Mexican travel by bus

by melosh

If you want to travel relatively safely, inexpensively and conveniently in Mexico use the bus. The extensive Mexican bus system goes just about everywhere, usually with a price and style to fit all interests. You can travel with chickens or with waitresses. Most people recommend higher class, fewer stop buses for longer trips. Many of the bus stations seem like airports in their size, but unfortunately this civic need for an impressive station has sometimes meant a compromise on central location, requiring use of a taxi or city bus to get to the city center.

Buses

by ChristinaNJ

Buses within Guadalajara were very convenient. Although they didn't have a posted schedule or posted route, you could find out from a local which buses go where, and they run so frequently that if you miss one, there's always another one coming soon.Buses from city to city left a little bit to be desired. They rarely had a restroom, and nine times out of ten the driver sped like a maniac. But we always got there in one piece. I would recommend bringing some food with you on longer bus trips. The driver usually stopped at a rest area/restaurant along the way, but the choice of food was limited.

West to East and back in Acapulco on the cheap

by skullcrusher

No matter where you happen to stay in Acapulco you will likely stay near enough to the beach that you can grab a bus to the other end of town for a mere 3.50 pesos. Sure, a taxi is faster but more expensive at about 25 pesos on average per trip. The most useful bus to hop on is the blue & white ones with the destinations ''Caleta, Zocalo, Hornos, Base'' written on the windshield in white letters. This tells you that the bus will go all the way along La Costera Road from the west end of Alcapulco (starts at Magico Mundo Marino - where you can grab a boat to Isla de Roqueta) all the way to the eastern end of town where the Icacos Naval Base is located and back again. Buses run from about 5AM until about 11PM so if you plan on doing some late night club hopping you'll be at the mercy of the taxi drivers or walking.

Buses--Easy as Uno, Dos, Tres

by Interlingua

Some people told me that bus travel in Mexico would be a hassle, but not true. Frequent, safe, comfortable, affordable and usually with great view of the countryside going by. Comared to its neighbor to the north, Mexican bus travel has lower prices, many more options and is used by a wider range of social classes. You won't be sitting next to a felon on parole like you might be doing in the States. Compared to its neighbors to the south in Central America, Mexican buses will be more comfortable but maybe less colorful. Guatemala's parrillas ("chicken buses" to tourists) are old converted American school buses, but Mexican has plain old regular pullman coaches, except on rural routes in the provinces. The top classes of bus are spacious, comfortable and punctual. Second class buses can be a bit simpler, but they work very well on more rural routes. One complication. If you're used to bus...
