Bus Travel--Relax and Enjoy

by Interlingua

Things not to worry aboutPeople often ask "What about the goats and chickens?" I've never seen any animals on a bus in Mexico. In some remote country buses, I've seen eggs and bundles on the roof, but nothing inside. Maybe they exist in some far away part of the country, but I suspect they're to be found only in armchair tourists' imaginations. In Central America, yes, you'll see buses used much more frequently to haul cargo, but not in Mexico.Another common, and I feel ungrounded worry, is the security of your backpack in the bus's holding area. In most larger stations, you check your bags 1/2 hour before departure and are given a receipt. Despite what some people say about mañana-syndrome or poor organization, this has always worked perfectly for me and everyone I know. Your luggage is put in the bus and it doesn't come out until you get to your destination and you claim it bus-side....

Go by BUS

by gkitzmil

In the USA many people avoid intercity (between major city) bus travel. In Mexico it is THE way to go! We used busses extensively for one to four hour trips. Why pay for a flight when the bus is great!

Be careful of detours

by shdw100

When you rent a car in Mexico, be sure to take out the insurance. You may run into some detours, such as this one, that is just a dirt road. I thought that the construction workers were joking when they said to take the dirt road, but apparently not. We hit rocks and dirt for about a mile. It was crazy!

The best way to get around: Bus, Pesero and Taxi

by bloorange

You can really get around the whole country with the buses (long distances), peseros or taxis (short distances). You can go everywhere. The buses red is so effective that you will always find one going to the place you want. The best way to visit the country and to meet people. Be prepare to spend some nights inside though!

Train

by mariquita

There are no passenger regular lines of railways in Mexico, but tourists like to ride on the famous Chihuahua - Los Mochis line, only for tourist purpose. It crosses the beautiful copper canyon or barrancas del cobre and you can buy handycrafts from the indians at the stops.

Walk

by nigelw6443

If you are travelling from the States into Tijuana for a day trip then leave the car at the border and walk in. There si not too much to buy that you can't get back home. There are long line ups but much safer.

The bus is a great alternative in mexico!

by biljah

Lately I have been taking the bus which isn't entirly a bad experience. When I first got here in mexico I only drove around with friends and the occasional taxi. It's only 4 pesos and it sure beats walking. The taxis generally are much more expensive, but give the bus a shot!

A Magic Bus ride

by IceBear7

It was nothing more than the bus ride from Tule back to Oaxaca... but these 30 minutes seem so much alive in my head. We were in this old, creaky bus, going really fast, loud music, open windows. And outside the mountains shining in the evening sun, beautiful shadow paintings.I just sat and watched and thought about nothing, when I got off I felt such a deep happiness inside!!

Transportation from or to resort

by fabiandmicha

They are 3 ways to get to Playa del Carmen and back to the resort. 1.) You go to the Main Avenue and every 10-20 minutes stops a Collecting cab. If it's already full, they wont't stop and you have to wait. But it's cheap ($1-2).2.) To several times, stop a regular bus, what brings you to town.3.) You catch a cab. Ask the driver for the price, before you start.

Buses in Mexico

Some Advice For Travelling On BusesGeneral: Long distance buses are convenient and cheap, they show silly movies all the time (mostly American with Spanish subtitles, but I watched some German movies dubbed into Spanish), they are freezing cold (take at least one jumper...) and they are great for meeting locals and other travelers. They stop every now and then to buy food and drink. Sometimes the vendors get on the bus to sell snacks. Tickets: You can buy them at the bus station or in Ticket Bus offices downtown. Or else over the internet or on the phone, but I did not do that. The whole system is computerized, you have a dedicated seat number (you may choose) and you can buy tickets for any route in any office. On some busy routes and busy days it might be better to book a day or two ahead. I was lucky to get the last remaining seat the day before Christmas on the Oaxaca - San Cristóbal...
