driving and insurance

by susiemargare

despite what anyone may tell you, american insurance is not valid in mexico. you must have mexican insurance to be protected there. of course, you can always drive without mexican insurance, but if you are in an accident, your american insurance will be of no good to you.as a practical matter, this means that if you rent a car in mexico, you are wise to sign up for the insurance even though, as in the united states, the cost is likely to be ridiculous.if you are crossing the border from the united states into mexico, there are offices of an insurance company named sanborn's right on the border where you can get mexican insurance.

dehydration

by smirnofforiginal

Dehydration is serious. You should drink plenty of liquids to help keep your body nicely hydrated. You will lose a lot of your body's liquids through sweat, along with minerals. It's never a bad idea to carry sachets such as Dioralyte that put all the goodness back into your body. I don't think I have ever drunk as much water as I did the days I walked around Uxmal and Dzibilichaltun (Yucatan Peninsula)!

Snakes

by smirnofforiginal

Some snakes are ok, others not so....Red touching yellow kills a fellow; Red touching black is a friend of Jack, Red on yellow, kill a fellow; Red on black, venom lack, Red and yellow, kill a fellow; Red and black, poison lack, or "Red touches black, you're ok Jack; Red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow.I think this is mainly about coral snakes (of which there are some in Mexico) and the general rule in this ditty seems to be beware yellow!!!You should never interfer with any wildlife and when it comes to snakes I would say this is especially true re. snakes!

Crocodiles

by smirnofforiginal

Morelet's crocodile is a relatively small species - up to 3m in length with a broad snout. It likes freshwater, including swamps and marshes, but it has been seen in slightly brackish waters. Because of the high quality of its skin this crocodile was hunted and hunted. It is a protected species but it still, sadly, hunted, illegally. Its numbers are in decline but that is now probably more to do with the destruction of its habitat. There are certain areas where there is exception, Sian Ka'an being one of them. These crocodiles are in decline but not endangered -there are between 10,000 and 20,000 in the wild. The American Crocodile is found in both freshwater, including rivers and lakes, and brackish water, including lagoons, estuaries and mangrove swamps. This is one of the larger crocodiles with a length of 5m although these crocodiles have been reported to groe to 7m!Like the Morelet's...

Red-Rump Tarantula

by smirnofforiginal

This is a jet black spider with red hairs on it's bottom (abdomen). The females may also have some red on their legs. The females are bigger than the males. These spiders are aggressive, descibed as"skittish" and can move very quickly indeed. They like to burrow. This spider defends itself against predators with its special urticating hairs on its abdomen. If these hairs get on the skin, they itch like bits of fiberglass, but if they get into mucus membranes and especially the eyes, much discomfort or injury could ensue, including possible blindness. This spider can also give a good bite but the red-rump tarantula has not been reported to possess a bite serious to humans.

Red Kneed Tarantula

by smirnofforiginal

Black with red bands on their legs. The females are bigger than the males. They have 8 eyes to help them see around the front and the back but their eye sight is poor so they rely on their sens of touch. When people think of a big spider - it's usually this fellow!Norturnal maybe but I saw lots meandering about during the day. We stopped the car on several ocassions so as to take a look and to not run them over as they ambled with attitude across the road.Mexican Red Kneed Tarantulas are usually peaceful, however, if threatened they will rear up and display the red bristles on their body. Not only can they bite and inject venom but the Mexican Red Kneed Tarantulas can rub their back legs making hair drop which can cause blindness or a painful rash to the victim. Tarantulas are apparently only dangerous to humans under particularl conditions, such as allergy. The cool fact is : Being a...

Scorpions

by smirnofforiginal

Scorpions belong to the family arachnids and can defend themselves rather well with their pincers and their arching tail equiped with sting. Whilst scorpions have two eyes they cannot see very well at all and rely very heavily on their sense of touch.Scorpions are nocturnal, tending to hide up during the daytime, generally in cooler places - This does not mean to say that you wont ever see one in the daytime! The majority of scorpions are harmless to humans, although the sting is extremely painful and will require painkilling but some stings can be deadly. Stings may cause paralysis, severe convulsions, cardiac irregularities, or breathing difficulties that may lead to death. Only one species of scorpion in North America has venom potent enough to be dangerous to human beings - Centruroides exilicauda (formerly called C. sculpturatus). The specific name Centruroides means pointed tail and...

DONT EAT OFF OF THE RESORT!

by mckinney906

My Husband and I did the ATV (four wheeling) in the Jungle. We were starving and even though our tour guides in the begining of our trip warned us "DONT DRINK THE WATER AND DONT EAT OFF OFF YOUR RESORT" well stupid us we were so hungry at the ATV tour in the jungle we decided to the eat the nachos the mexicans had so kindly prepaired for us to eat. Well by 8:00pm that night I knew something I ate didnt agree with me so I took some Phenergan a prescription I brought just in case I got nauseas or threw up well I woke up at 4:30 in the morning puking my brains out. Keep in mind I had to get up at 6:30 to get ready to leave for the airport. I barley made it to the airport. I puked the entire way there in the bus (how embaressing) then in the airport my husband started feeling ill. I knew it was the nachos. As soon as we landed in Cincinnati we headed straight to the hospital. I had ecoli and...
