Watch your step!

by alza

Sidewalks often have huge, deep holes in them. Most holes I've seen seem to be done purposely, probably for water evacuation. The way the holes are neatly cut out (relatively speaking) makes them difficult to spot from even a short distance. Be careful when walking of the sidewalk. Cuidate!

Don't become a statistic!

by TheWanderingCamel

Check your government's travel advice on crime in Mexico, take careful note and follow it. This is not scare-mongering. Robbery - with violence - is all too common. We met a young Englishman who had been robbed at knifepoint within 20 minutes of leaving the airport terminal. He was still in shock, but he was lucky - all they took was his money. Mexico City has a particularly bad name for taxi crime and whilst there reports that the authorities are cracking down on this and other forms of crime against tourists I wouldn't be at all complacent about. The best advice about picking up a cab in the street is DON'T. Hopping into one could ruin your holiday. At the airport take a registered airport taxi and pay for it inside the terminal ); from your hotel or from a restaurant, get the desk to call you a radio cab and ask them to make a note of the licence plate number. If you must get a taxi...

Beware of people leading horses

by ob2514

The hotel we were staying at (Hotel Corona) refused to let you have any drinks in the room or you would be asked to leave. We took our drinks to the beach RIGHT IN FRONT of the hotel. There was people all over the beach and even a big party with tons of people about 50 feet from us. A man came up leading a horse- they give those "horse ride on the beach" tours all over so we thought nothing of it. He asked me for a cigarette and when I reached for my purse...so did he. I grabbed on for dear life and we struggled for awhile until he started beating me in the head. My friends started screaming at me to let go because I had no idea that he was actually hitting me with the gun in his hand. Needless to say I let go and he waved his gun at the other people with me and took their belongings as well. The ambulance people were very good to me but the police were so concerned with ruining the...

Taxi Cabs

by ant1606

Not all cabs are safe ones. I personally know people who were "quick-kidnapped" by taxi drivers in exchange for ransom, especially outside the airport. Avoid climbing on the first cab, and avoid accepting offers from drivers who are often not officially licensed. If you need a cab, ask for directions and go to the counter inside the terminal to reserve an official service. When going to Mexico on business, I always have the companies I visit to arrange transportation for me and send a safe service. There are several cab companies in Mexico City and these have different cars and colors. Most popular vehicle is the Beetle, always missing the front seat for easier passenger access. The majority of these cars have seen better days.

by iris2002

As I was travelling on my own - I was very careful but it didn't help ....One day in broad daylight close to an underpass I was face to face with a 4.5 mexican waving a knife at me and spitting out spanish phrases I could not understand ...I felt almost sorry - as me with my 5.9 and cowboyboots could probably have lifted him up with one hand he was so thin and wiry...Thank god the cavalery came in form of two Americans 6.4 hunks Navy Seals on landleave from San Diego...The little mexican fled the scene quick like a weasle....

by spalatino

Green Beetle Taxis

by Micahlahren

Whatever the situation, do not ride in a green beetle taxi. Customarily those are known as dangers as they are usually two door vehicles and once you're in the taxi, you can't get out unless the driver gets out. And if the taxi driver has something bad in mind for you, you can't get out.

by pedroebc

..the dangerous band MARA SALVATRUCHA come from centralamerica countries, not from Mexico,.. this gang operate in the border of state of Chiapas in the border with Guatemala , they are so dangerous that they kill for pleasure, rape fur fun, and fight almost to die to be admited in the band... you can recognise them becouse they have lot of tatoos everywhere and hip hop style... beware travelers some bad histories have happened in the last months against travelers in that border.in central america new technique for robbers is..they throw a kind of jelly saying its acid, this not true, dont worry and keep your bags in hands.

Border Cops

by BlackSheeper

Recently my boyfriend and I were in El Paso, and decided to go over to Juarez for a day trip. He is a Turkish citizen, so we read up on everything ahead of time. The border webpage and various pamphlets all stated that there would be no trouble re-entering the U.S. if a traveler had the proper visa, stub, etc. However, that was not the case! They pulled my boyfriend over for questioning for 3 hours (longer than we were even in Mexico for) and put him through a whole interrogation even though he had all of the correct paperwork. I would not recommend Middle East travelers to cross the border the same way -- perhaps it is different if you book a tour, but don't walk over the bridge -- they'll put you through hell!
