Topes

by GUYON

Impossible to drive in the Mexico avoiding the "Topes" (speed ramp) which are put each 100, 200 or 300 meters in the towns and their outskirts. The Mexicans slow down and pass very carefully on the topes in order to protect their car or truck because they know the repear worths a lot.More cruel : the vibrador, a serie of small speed ramps to shake the passing car.

Drugs. Stay Away!!

by AnnaLupilla

Marijuana, cocaine, hash, etc. are illegal drugs in Mexico. The possession, purchase, sale or distribution of any or all will land you in a Mexican jail - a not-very-nice experience. Plus, when they hand out sentences for this offense, they love to give between seven and fifteen years. So once again: Stay away!!

Personal safety and theft

by ant1606

As travelers, we should always pay a little extra attention to our belongings and our personal safety. Visiting Mexico is no exception, main port of entry is Mexico City airport and probelms might start right there. I have personally experienced close calls most everytime I've been there and I report the following:1. My colleague had his notebook stolen while processing his ticket at check-in. Despite his bag was on the floor but tightly secured between his legs, it was gone before he could realize it.2. Some areas inside the airport terminal abund with non-travelers. These people might rather be there on their mission to wait for happy occasions. I've been approached by a lady cuddling a baby, who candidly asked me to look or go to a certain direction. As soon as she approached, her "colleague" was coming to the area where we piled up some luggage. I realized it and nothing happened....

Watch your change!

by elgarbo

If you buy anything from a street vendor or a market, or anywhere in general, it's always a good idea to count your change straight away. Otherwise, you're bound to 'donate' a few extra pesos to whoever served you.My friend bought a hotdog from a street vendor and discovered - after we'd walked some distance - that he'd received $10 less change than he should have. Always be on your guard for this sort of thing.

Colorless hot sauce

by melosh

Jicama is a tubor with a pleasant almost water chestnut taste. A cool cut slice is white and refreshing. Sometimes a little pepper powder and lime are used to add extra flavor. Faced with a nice slice without pepper it can be the most natural thing to just pop it into your mouth, but beware there is this clear pepper juice that can be added which will bring tears to the eyes of a 16 year old macho boy. I thought I could tolerate any hot sauce, but if I had been warned, I would not have taken the whole thing in one mouthful.

Make sure your souvenir was made in Mexico

by melosh

Due to globalization or whatever, many tourist market items are imported even in countries with low manufacturing costs. This goes beyond the pirate Nike shoes and other items imported from Asia. I have noted for example, Peruvian, Ecuadorian and Guatemalan craft items in Mexican tourist markets. In fact, I have met Guatemalan and Peruvian craftsmen who confirmed that they were able to sell some of their product for reselling in Mexico. A vendor might not be forthcoming about the true origin of what they sell, if he/she believes it might lose them the sale, so if it is important to you, ask carefully before you buy.

phone calls to the usa

by susiemargare

it is VERY EXPENSIVE to call the united states from mexico, especially from a hotel. it is easier, i have found, to arrange a date, time, and location for someone else to call you instead. another VT member who has recently been to mexico tells me that with the advent of phone 'calling cards,' this advice may no longer be true. perhaps you should check some of the other mexico/puerto vallarta pages to see what they say about this.

Topes

by Enzyme_X

Mexicos favourite way to reduce speed, is to place speed bumps, so called topes, everywhere where they are needed and where they are not. Roads are full of them. Slowely they can get on your nerves. Not to mention it can be dangerous, as sometimes they are not well marked. Specailly at night it can be critical. Be careful when driving on your own around Mexico. If you're using public transport, don't sit at the back. It seem that the ''tope-effect'' is worst in the back ot the bus. You'll be jumping around against your will.

New travel advisory to mexico

by mexdf

This Public Announcement is to alert U.S. citizens to the continuing unsettled public security situation along the Mexican side of the U.S.-Mexico border. This Public Announcement supercedes the Public Announcement of January 26, 2005 to update the information provided. It expires on July 29, 2005. Violent criminal activity fueled by a war between criminal organizations struggling for control of the lucrative narcotics trade continues along the U.S.-Mexico border. This has resulted in a wave of violence aimed primarily at members of drug trafficking organizations, criminal justice officials and journalists. However, foreign visitors and residents, including Americans, have been among the victims of homicides and kidnappings in the border region. A power vacuum within criminal organizations resulting from the imprisonment of several of their leaders along the Mexico-U.S. border continues...

Just when you think you are safe (diarrhea)

by penpoison

When I first traveled to Mexico, I was extremely careful with the food and water but as soon as took my flight from Mexico City to the United States I thought I was safe. Boy was I wrong!!! I had the salad and the next couple of days I paid for it (traveler's diarrhea). So even if you are being extremely careful chances are that you are going to get it in some way or form. So be careful even on your flight to your home country since there is no way to tell where your airline food is coming from or sourced from.
