Why not try eating anywhere except at chain restaurants for a while. First of all , the food won't be worse; likewise the prices. More importantly, you will get out from under the impersonal shroud that covers the American freeway-driving experience. The local restaurants and cafes of Main-Street America are full of life and warmth, personalities and characters. People talk to each other, exchange the latest gossip, even ask strangers where they're from and where they're going. It may take you 15 minutes extra to leave the freeway, drive into town, and find a restaurant, but you're likely to observe more about that region over your meal than you could discover by eating for a week at the interstate chain restaurants. Look for the ordinary cafes where America and its people can still be seen 'in the rough': farmers, truck drivers, local businessmen, ranchers, salesmen, housewives, waitresses.
