The Grand Canyon

by Bwana_Brown

In April, 2002 I had some time before a business meeting in the southwestern USA Rockies, near Phoenix, Arizona, only a few hours drive from the world famous Grand Canyon National Park. My wife and I quickly jumped into a rental car and headed for an overnight stay at Yavapai Point, on the South Rim at Grand Canyon Village. From there you can stare down 4500 feet to the Colorado River snaking its way along the bottom of the canyon. Across the 10-mile wide canyon at this point the North Rim is actually higher with a 5400 foot drop to the river, giving the Grand Canyon an average depth of almost 1-mile. The next morning, just outside the NP and only a few miles from the Rim we noticed that the Papillon ('butterfly' in French) Helicopter Co. had a very nice looking tour centre for flights over the canyon. Realizing that we probably would never be back to this area again, we decided to fork...

Canada’s Maritime Provinces

by Bwana_Brown

A few years ago, the photographers and editors of the National Geographic Magazine were asked to pick their favourite destinations in Canada – first place went to the Rocky Mountains because of their spectacular natural beauty but the Maritime Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) on the Atlantic coast came in second thanks to their varied natural beauty combined with a relaxed and friendly way of life. The greatest natural attraction in this area is the Bay of Fundy, lying between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and having the world’s highest tidal range (over 50 ft). This harbour scene on the Fundy shores, near Deer Island, NB is typical of many small fishing ports dotted around the coasts in this part of Canada. With so much coastline, there are bound to be numerous lighthouses as well, and the 2nd photo shows a typical example – Head Harbour light on...

San Francisco – one of America’s great cities

by Bwana_Brown

San Francisco is one of my favourite cities on the continent. Located in California, further south along the Pacific coast from British Columbia, my first visit was a brief one in 1979 as my family passed through on our way to a three year working assignment in Papua New Guinea. I only made it back a second time in 2003 as members of my wife’s family converged from England for a get-together. It is not difficult to be impressed by the Golden Gate bridge – this view was taken from the Battery Spencer area on its northern side from an area of fortifications built in 1895 to protect the harbour. The bridge itself opened for traffic in 1937 after a 4-year construction project and is still considered one of the engineering marvels of the world. We had a great time wandering the streets of the city and taking in the sights – Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Coit Tower and the views from...

Beautiful British Columbia

by Bwana_Brown

We finished off our 1999 tour of Vancouver Island in British Columbia with a visit to the beautiful little town of Tofino, located on the west side of the island just outside the northern end of Canada’s Pacific Rim National Park. Tofino is a laid-back, hippyish sort of place with a beautiful harbour located between the snow-capped peaks of the central Vancouver Island Ranges and the many heavily-treed inlets of the coast. We enjoyed a high speed Zodiac whale watching trip while there, enjoying both the landscape and great sightings of huge Grey whales. The moist and warm airs of the Pacific Ocean make for some huge trees all along these coasts and logging is a very big industry. We had a taste of that earlier in the trip when we stopped for a look around MacMillan Provincial Park as we left the east coast of the island and headed for Tofino on the west coast, via Port Alberni. The main...

Dry conditions of the Southwestern USA

by Bwana_Brown

Moving a couple of thousand miles south to New Mexico, about midway between Taos and Santa Fe in the north of the state, the highway meets the Rio Grande River gorge at a little place called Pilar. Located there is an interpretive center with interesting facts on the river, where it cuts some steep gorges through the rocks and there are a few places where you can pull off the highway to enjoy what the Rio Grande has to offer. This far north, the river is not very wide and, in July 2003 the current was also quite tame, just a few rapids here and there. Outfits offer rafting or kayaking rides, where you can float along for a few miles over some small rapids and enjoy the scenery. During a separate trip to neighbouring Arizona, I was very happy to see my first Saguaro forest. Tonto National Forest, slightly smaller than Connecticut at nearly 3 million acres, is the 5th largest National...

Quebec - French culture and rugged wilderness!

by Bwana_Brown

Speaking of Quebec, this French-speaking ‘island’ surrounded by English-speaking Canadians and Americans is a little world of its own – almost like stepping into a European city when you visit either its largest city of Montreal or the provincial capital of Quebec City. Quebec City, founded in 1608, is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the only walled city in North America. This view of the famous Chateau Laurier Hotel, built for Canadian Pacific Railway passengers, was taken from the walls of the Citadel fortress which historically commanded passage below on the St. Lawrence River.Montreal also has plenty of attractions such as the views and walking trails of Mont Royal (for which the city was named), the Olympic Stadium and its surrounding attractions, many museums and shows as well as great downtown shopping and restaurant areas. Close to the harbour along the St.Lawrence...

Big cities: New York, Boston, Toronto and Ottawa

by Bwana_Brown

Some of North America’s most famous cities are located in the northeast, not far from either side of the Canada/USA border. If you make a trip to America, it is almost obligatory to at least check out New York City, a place I have visited many times but only rarely as a ‘tourist’. The famous skyscraper views, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, shows and museums – there is so much to see and do. I always enjoyed the action around Times Square in downtown Manhatten, alive with activity day and night! The atmosphere in the city has improved immensely since my first visit in 1976 as things have become much safer and cleaner.Located not too far away is another of my favourites - Boston, Massachusetts. Quite a bit smaller than NYC in its feel, this is a historic old city that is great for strolling around and enjoying the architecture or sights along the harbourfront. It has lots of great...

Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula

by Bwana_Brown

My wife and I finally made it to Mexico in 2003 when we arranged a trip to Cancun. It is so close to the Mayan ruins at Chichen-Itza that we thought that was also a "must visit"! We paid US$33 each for a fully-guided bus trip (8 AM to 6 PM) including lunch. These ruins date from about 514 AD and were abandoned by about 1250, with this view showing the 75-ft tall El Castillo (or the Pyramid of Kukulkan), the largest structure on the site and named by the Spaniards when they arrived on the scene in the 1500s. It has 364 steps (91 on each side) plus the top platform to equate to the 365 days of the year, in keeping with Mayan love of math and astronomy. The 45 degree angle of the steps is a bit daunting when you are on the top looking down - the steps are narrow and there are no hand-holds at all. It is possible that climbing is no longer allowed for safety reasons.Another fun spot was on...
