take to peaks and lakes,...

by tmmcgrath

take to peaks and lakes, climb, look east, then drift the prairie...all accomodations, potential tourist traps are a secondary mission. 'Brownies' the youth hostel here in East Glacier has owners who are rude witht their hire help in front of customers, and they show little patience with foriegners whose English is not precise. It's on our way into the mountains as we set off to work the trails...I'll go downtown to buy a candy bar, or whatever, rather than give those folks my money.

The tourist traps in New York...

by dyslexia

The tourist traps in New York are obvious: The Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, Fifth Avenue...however, don't let it bother you; you know you're going to want to go to those places anyway, so why fight it? Urban America is a land of rampant commercialism and should be wholeheartedly engaged with as such.

Stay away from EVERYTHING...

by karmaman2002

Stay away from EVERYTHING having to do with Princess Tours. They are a cancerous company that brings in hordes of tourists to Alaska, to the benefit of no-one but huge national corporations. The tourists flood in, spend small amounts of money on trinkets made in China, and leave. Anything associated with this Cruise Line is fairly sketchy ethically and economically.

some of the day excursions...

by KSPLASHY

some of the day excursions were a bit of a rip - off .They promised amazing diving just 1 hour out of the main port - it turns out that i saw more when i was being certified to dive in victoria, bc , which was also pretty lame diving surroundings.Another thing to watch out for is that the price of goods in the markets, sky rockets on wed/thurs because the vendors know that all of the major cruise ships port on these days.Your best bet for for 'budget' shopping is deffinetley early week, or late weekend, like a sunday. Also be warned that alot of these vendors have the exact same goods for much different prices...

by nuker

I personally have not, but never get suckered into buying a time share from somebody on the street offering a 'good deal'. Times shares are great, but some real thought should be put into it.
