Air Travel, rail, or your own car. Private pilots have plenty of small airports that you can land on their airstrips just about anytime. Call ahead though to be safe.By car, with a good state map or road atlas.

If you are traveling by car...

by karen_jim

If you are traveling by car the Garden State Parkway which runs North and South or the New Jersey Turnpike which runs East and West depending on where you are traveling from/to. They are both toll roads. If traveling by plane you into Newark airport and renting a car, you will most likely want to take the Garden State Parkway North or South. Both the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike have ascending/descending exit numbers. Know what exit number is nearest to your planned destination. Area maps are sold at rest stops on the Garden State Parkway & NJ Turnpike. Don't hesitate to ask for directions. People are really nice. If possible I'll ask a postman, because they seem to be most knowledgeable about a specific area.

I've traveled all over North...

by pamelajoy

I've traveled all over North America. I've used the bus, train, auto, motorhome, camper, private plane, and jet. If you want to get their quickest, of course, you should fly. But land transportation gives you more chance to see the country. Private vehicle travel gives you the most flexibility. Train and bus travel allows you to sightsee without having to do the driving. Most of the time, I fly to my destination. When I get there, I rent a car and do my local traveling. When I visit relatives, they are more than happy to loan me something to drive. On one trip, I flew to visit my parents. I borrowed my Mom's car and spent a week in Chicago. On another trip I drove my Mom's car to Connecticut. My neice drove me to New York to visit friends. It pays to be in good with your relatives!

Use the subway in NYC...I did everyday! It is cheap, fast and efficient. I also found it safe, and the tickets are easy to buy - counter or machine. You will also see some really cool street performers in the subway! I loved it...spent 20 minutes watching two guys banging on plastic buckets...wow! Had to be there to believe it..they were great!

If you're traveling to the USA...

by Krystynn

If you're traveling to the USA from Asia or Australia, where your flight will probably arrive at noon/ evening, the best way to deal with jet lag is to sleep for no more than three hours and FORCE yourself out of bed... have a wake-up shower (steamy hot!) and go out for a short stroll and then grab something to eat. By the time you return to your hotel room, it’s bed time and you can go to bed and (hopefully) have a full eight hours of sleep! With a bit of luck you’ll wake up somewhat refreshed. And DON'T drink alcohol or caffeine at all on the plane! I have seen how some passengers literally go berserk drinking loads of alcohol (just because it's free). If you (like me) must have your morning coffee otherwise you can't think and function properly, wait until it’s actually morning in your new destination. Well, this little 'trick' has always worked for me. As far as I know, a human...

Passenger rail service is very...

by jtb2inky

Passenger rail service is very good but limited throughout North America. The eastern seaboard tends to be much better connected by rail than anywhere else. If you were planning on going from New York City to Washington DC rail is definitely a good choice. Rail service across the continent does exist as well, and can be lots of fun. But for those who are here with limited time they should plan on flying. Rail travel is also expensive in North America. In many cases flying will save you lots of money over taking the train. See the following websites for passenger rail information:> http://www.amtrak.com (USA)> http://www.cn.ca (Canada)

By far the best way to see...

by jtb2inky

By far the best way to see this large continent is by car. Driving is quite easy, and fuel prices are ridiculously low. An automobile will get you places in this country that no other form of travel can match. If you are planning on visiting cities on both coasts do not plan on driving across the country unless you have plenty of time. It is a great trip to take, but the distances are long. You may want to fly from coast to coast instead. Other than that - Drive the open road! A great website for those of you who plan to conquer the roads in America and see its vast sites is http://www.roadsideamerica.com. For trips into Mexico driving is best left to the experienced. Although driving in Mexico is getting easier every day.

The best way to get to Alaska...

by karmaman2002

The best way to get to Alaska is to fly into Stevens International Airport. From there Anchorage has hundreds of travel agencies to choose from. I personally would buy a car in Anchorage. It can always be resold later, and it opens up a lot of options. It is also probably the cheapest form of transportation, and not really all that hard to arrange.Stay away from the Alaska Railroad. It is a tourist trap, and excrutiatingly slow.

We travelled Japan Airlines...

by ozkylie

We travelled Japan Airlines Brisbane, Australia to Vancouver, Canada with a stopover in Tokyo. The service and accommodation were really impressive. However it makes for a long trip. Next time I would definitely travel direct. Thoroughly recommend the service on Japan Airlines..pity they didn't have direct flights.Definitely car hire..we got a good deal from Alamo Car Rentals and would use them again. We took a four wheel drive as an upgrade option and it allowed us to visit Yosemite in Dec - a highlight of our trip.
