I recommend driving or taking a train or bus. You want to see the US up close and personal. Take time to check out interesting signs...don't be in a hurry.

Use an airplane when neessary. It is easier the driving. Only if you insist to drive for sightseeing reasons I would say drive. I would say fly from coast to coast but drive to stay on the coast.
All my family trips have been by car. We just packed up and off we went. To me, this is the only way to travel. You can stop and see so much along the way.
