the limestone county confederate memorial is located on the grounds of the limestone county courthouse in the athens historic district. the memorial is a standing solder motif which is common in the south.

athens has a very nice historic district downtown. courthouse square has a couple of restraunts and several shops. the historic district is home to the beautiful limestone county courthouse and a number of historic buildings and homes. athens is an interesting one mile side trip from I-65 for those interested in architecture and southern culture.

lawlers barbecue is a local chain with seven locations in north alabama and south tennessee. i had lunch at their location on US 72 & I-65 in athens. lawlers serves very good alabama style chopped pork barbecue. when in north alabama i would recommend lawlers.

maria bonita is a very good mexican restaurant and cantina located on courthouse square in downtown athens. good mexican food moderately priced. maria bonita also has a full liquor bar.
