Another tradition not to miss when in Auburn is getting a glass of lemonade at Toomer Drugstore just across the street from the university. Toomer Drugstore has been here serving lemonade and providing for the needs of the citizens of Auburn since 1896. They also serve sandwiches, apple pie and ice cream. Souvenirs are available too. Hours are 10 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 7 PM Saturday, and 12 PM to 5 PM on Sunday. Lots of Auburn students work here so there is also an ample supply of attractive young people.
In 2001, Esquire Magazine listed "162 Reasons it is Good to be An American" and number 1 was Toomer's Lemonade.
There has been a long tradition at Auburn University to celebrate at the end of a game by covering the oak trees at Toomer's Corners with toilet paper. That tradition has gone on for over 80 years as college students and Auburn fans, frequently fueled by copious amounts of alcohol, covered the trees amidst shouts of "WAR EAGLES". The crowd was usually rowdy but orderly enough. In 2010 Alabama fan John Updyke Jr., upset over a win by Auburn over his beloved Alabama poisened the trees. The trees may have died but the spirit of Auburn fans probably never will. The trees were about dead when I saw them and have since been removed. The tradition, however, remains. Come by after a game and join in!
By the way, because of this tradition, Auburn is the only city in the nation with a line item on the budget for "toilet paper removal".
If you are in town the weekend of a football game, the team must win for you to experience this "local custom". Immediately after a win by the football team hundreds if not thousands of Auburn fans flock to the corner of Magnolia and College streets to roll "Toomer's Corner"(Yes, it is legal). This corner recieved it's name from Toomer's Drugs which is on the opposite side of the intersection. It is not neccessary that you bring your own toilet paper, as it will be landing all around you. It is an experience one must have to appreciate. Also, if you are able to stop by during the day make sure to get some lemonade at Toomer's Drugs.
