Iron Horse Cafe: Iron Horse Cafe

by TravellerMel Written Jun 4, 2012

Came here to see my favorite band in the world - COWBOY MOUTH. Show started really late, so we had to hang out for over 2 hours. It's basically a bar - several pool tables and tv's on one side, and a concert stage and bar on the other, separated by a large bar area in the middle. Since it is a bar, smoking is allowed - my sinuses protested almost immediately. The show was great, and it is fine for a semi-intimate show (I'd guess the concert side holds maybe 300).

The Blue Monkey: Kick Back and Relax

    by lisa_lise Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Voted "Best Martini" and "Best Martini Bar." Packed with diverse professional people in their 20s and 30s by 12:30. Spacious outdoor patio lit by fluorescent blue lanterns that somehow manage not to be garish. About four or five rooms inside, starting with a bar in the first room, which yields to rooms of plush furniture and subdued lighting. The final room is serenaded by a piano player. This is not a dancing place. This is the perfect place to be mellow, chat with friends, and make new friends.

Dress Code: Can't really remember wardrobe, but I don't think I saw jeans. Seemed like typical club attire.

    on tap sports cafe

the on tap sports cafe is located in the parking lot of the galleria shopping mall in hoover. this large sports bar has a number of big screen televisons for sports watching. a great place to watch alabama or auburn football games in the fall. in my opinion one of the best sports bars in the birmingham area.

    the garage

the garge is located in an old auto repair shop in the highland section of downtown birmingham. this very unique bar has a large courtyard that is decorated with antiques. a very interesting and fun place to have a drink in birmingham. the only draw back to the garage is that it is not easy to find or get to but any local in the highlands area can give you directions.

22nd St. Jazz: Dance, Dance, Dance

    by lisa_lise Written Jun 29, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Stopped in here late Saturday night after sweeping through a couple other places that weren't our style. Nice to sit among locals and enjoy the bluesy guitar performances and lively atmosphere. This is a place to dance your feet off (one barefoot girl in a sundress had apparently danced her shoes off).

Dress Code: Some people wore jeans, but most women wore sundresses or skirts and most men wore khakis and polos or button-down shirts.

  • The biggest hole-in-the-wall...

    by Becky_A. Written Sep 2, 2002

The biggest hole-in-the-wall place in Birmingham, but also one of my favorite, is the Upside-Down-Plaza located beneath the Pickwick Plaza in the 5 Points Area.
It doesn't smell that great, but after 5 minutes, you don't notice it anymore. Several pool tables, dart machines and the friendliest bar staff in town. Lots of regulars, you you can always find a familiar face.

Dress Code: Obviously, as casual as you want to be.
