Cheaha Lake

At the foot of the mountain is this family facility. There are trails in this area, one of which leads up the mountain. The lake also offers an excellent picnic spot and is good for swimming in season. It is a few minutes away from the top of the mountain, where the main lodge and restaurant is located. The road is winds through the forest on its way to the lake. Be sure to watch for bicycles, pedestrians, and possible wildlife. I did see some deer near the summit at dusk.

Bald Rock Trail

Cheaha Mountain has several worthy walks in the woods. Some of them lead to nice overlooks of the area. Bald Rock Trail, near the summit, is a boardwalk going through the woods to an overlook point. This is one of the easier trails for those who do not want to exert themselves too much. Pulpit Rock trail leads to another great overlook area. If someone is looking for a longer hike, it is possible to hike from Cheaha Lake at the foot of the mountain up towards the top. Most of the trails originate from the road that circles the top of the mountain. In fact, most of the facilities are withing walking distance of the top. In the winter, be sure to bring warm clothing. It can get windy in certain spots.

Observation Tower

This structure was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This stone tower is open through much of the day and stands on the highest spot on the mountain and Alabama. The survey marker can be found on the walkway approaching the building. This building is surrounded by forestland and radio towers as it overlooks the Alabama highcountry. If you come to the park, you might as well come here so that you can say you stood on the highest point.

Favorite thing: To get to the park from I-20, take exit 191 not far from Anniston. You will continue south through the Telladega National Forest on 431 before turning onto 281 towards the park. There are plenty of signs to guide you as well. The road will steadily climb as you approach the high area.

Lodging opportunities vary from a primitive campsite to RV camping to an on site motel. I chose the motel since it was very cold outside in February and I did not have all of my camping supplies.

There is a restaurant across from the lodge which serves good food. The restaurant also overlooks the valley below. Prices were generally affordable. Next to the restaurant is a swimming pool, which would be great in the warmer seasons. A mercantile is near the park entrance. Here, you can load up on supplies that you may have forgotten earlier.

This park is well developed. You can drive to the summit and to the trailheads. A road loops around the immediate summit area. Most of the camping and lodging is off of this loop.

Follow this link for more info about the park.

Fondest memory: Coming during an off season time and having the trails to myself.
