    Strange Resdiential Structures

Ok ok I know this is pushing it under. "local customs," but there are some strange residential structures in Dauphin Island.

As soon as you come off of the bridge on SR 193 from Mobile on the right hand of the road before the stop sign there are these five tall but incredibly narrow structures on the water. Turns out these are little housing and warming units for folks who are ready to go out on the water. i swear that they could not have more than 10 to 15' in depth. Very odd.

Being a barrier island and subject to the Gulf tides a good portion of the homes are built on homes or supports. While this seems like a legitimate solution to a problem these structures just look strange. Take a drive along the north side of Dauphin Island and the wacky design of these structures will become more apparent.

    House on Stilts

You will see many of the homes in the area built on stilts due to the frequent flooding caused by hurricanes and other adverse weather.
