The only way is by car. The nearest airport is in Birmingham, which is about 20 minutes away by car. The train station near Morris Ave. in downtown Birmingham is just about the same distance. It's in an old industrial area that is now just boarded up, so I would not advise anybody to hang out there alone after dark. The Greyhound station in downtown Birmingham is in a slightly better (although not much) area, but my family's experiences on that Greyhound in Alabama are, um, interesting. My experience was that at least half of the passagers were drunk or stoned. My mother shared a ride with non-English speakers whom she suspected of being illegals. It wasn't that that bothered her; it was the fact that they had their chickens with them.
I tried to walk when I first got here, but it is not really possible because of lack of sidewalks. CARS are the only way to go. There have been some new bike trails built that run along Lakeshore Drive. However, to get to these trails one must bike along the bike-unfriendly Homewood streets.

There is a city bus that I see every week or so that takes people to and from Birmingham. The route is rather limited, it runs only a few times a day, and it does not appear to run on any schedule that I can determine.
