 | Mobile Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 23 | | You would never find this place (I don't think you would, anyway) if you didn't know about it. I love this place because it IS Mobile to me. It's in a neighborhood almost downtown, one street away is a beautiful old part of town. Very southern--large plantation style houses, live oaks...it's my favorite part of town. Oh, but anyway...the actual restaurat: it's small, crowded and packed with locals. Definitely not a touristy place, but the food is great. (not if you're dieting, I suppose)
The fried green tomatoes (I SAID this place WAS Mobile!), the battered mushrooms, the burgers, the tacos, the chili...I could go on and on! Leave a Comment

This is probably one of my favorite restaurants of all time. It's downtown, across from Cathedral Square and serves excellent casual, local food. They are best known for their strawberry iced tea but that's just the beginning. They have terrific breakfasts and such good sandwiches and soups. The atmosphere inside is so cute and it makes you feel at home. On Sunday mornings, people come in from church and the little girls are SO dressed up and adorable. Here's the best part--in mid December, we sat OUTSIDE!! It was sunny and pretty warm, I got to take Bobby here and it was perfect. The beginning to a wonderful day.
I had the hot pastrami and swiss with pepperocini. It was terrific. Of course, I had the strawberry tea. Bobby had tea as well but he got a British Dip sandwich. Mmmm, thinking about this place makes me hungry;-) By the way, they do have dinner theatre, but generally, they are only open from 7am-2pm every day Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Dauphin StreetDirections: Take Dauphin all the way downtown. These 2 places are completely different only in that they cater to 2 completely different neighborhoods. I've been to Cock of the Walk a few times and only eaten what other people have picked up from Gone Fishin. Both have good Catfish--the Gone Fishin restaurant is more of a fast food kind of thing and Cock of the Walk is a sit down, get served place--a little more upscale and family oriented. In Mobile, you should get the catfish, though--it's another very local dish:))
At Cock of the Walk they also have fried dill pickles--again, something I NEVER had until moving to Mobile, but they are really good. Of course, there's friend okra and greens there as well. At both places and throughout Mobile, you'll find foods that you never thought about frying are offered on menus. I also really like the mexican cornbread at Cock of the Walk--after living in Mobile, I definitely prefer jalapeno cornbread (but if you ask anyone who knows me, I seize all opportunities to add jalepenos to anything). Gone Fishin, like I said is more of a fast food place, but you can get hush puppies and greens--things are in baskets, I believe. Again, I only ate what someone brought me from there, so don't quote me on that. The directions and prices below apply for Cock of the Walk...here's the information for Gone Fishin Spinghill Avenue. Take I-65 to exit 5A heading east toward downtown. It will be on the left hand side. Prices are less than $10 per person. Now, lets be perfectly honest. The deep south is NOT known for their pizza. How many times have you said or heard someone else say "Oh, you're going to Alabama, make sure you try the fantastic local pizza joints" Nope, never heard that. But the Picklefish at least tries and to be honest, I'm impressed. They not only have regular decent pizza but they have gourmet pizzas as well. AND they are definitely smart in their location choices. They're located downtown right in the middle of all the clubs and bars, they stay open VERY late and give people a place to hang out and sober up. The other location is by the university i graduated from--the University of South Alabama up on Old Shell in West Mobile.
I like trying all of them...they have good, original varieties. But I really love the observation room...that's fun. Watching the drunk a$$ people make fools of themselves down on Dauphin Street. hehe;-) Leave a Comment Theme: PizzaPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Dauphin Street downtown and Old Shell W. Another thing I think Mobile is lacking is good, local coffeeshops. Sure, they have plenty of Starbucks (that's a new development, too...there used to be just one in the Barnes and Noble) But if you're downtown, thankfully you have a great coffeeshop right there. Mostly Muffins is the only straight up cafe on Dauphin Street. Espressos, Lattes and...muffins! They have an excellent variety to choose from...unfortunately, they are not open on Sunday mornings.
I like choosing between the different muffins. I am not sure, but I think they do change every day. I had a chocolate chip one that last time and also an apple cinnamon one the time before. The coffee is also good Leave a Comment Theme: CoffeehousePrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Dauphin Street, downtownDirections: If you're heading into downtown from midtown, take Dauphin to the last block. This restaurant is an old bar that has reopened and is popular with many locals. I believe it once was a private club type of bar. Politicians sometimes stop by to shake hands and smooze the vote. Many movers & shakers of Mobile come here. It has won the Lagniappe's best hamburger award for 2004 & 2005. It is also known for a brunch of sorts on Sundays. Also has a HUGE St. Patrick's day celebration. It has a New Orleans corner pub kind of atmosphere. Beaded board interior with paint peeling. Looks like a hole in the wall but that's the charm of it all. Sit in the old stalls. Technically a bar, but many bring their children for the great grilled cheese sandwiches. Outside seating to get away from the cigarette smoke. A favorite during Mardi Gras for Oakleigh Garden District residents as you can walk a mere two blocks to the parade route. At night, periodic bands from many different music styles, including celtic. Decent juke box. What I like about it is that it's a neighborhood bar. Be aware that in Mobile, there is a labor shortage and service isn't the greatest. That's a problem everywhere.
The hamburger is supposedly great, according to my husband; however, I enjoy the grilled cheese made with 4 different cheeses. I 'll also get a side of pasta salad. After you eat, walk one block WEST on Charleston and take a turn around the lovely Washington Square admiring Oakleigh Garden District homes dating to late 1860's-1870's. An average restaurant which just happened to be next to where we were staying at the Battleship Memorial park. They serve American cuisine with an emphasis on seafood and steaks. The food was ok but a little pricey. The waiter was hilarious. Spilt the water while pouring it because we asked a question at the same time and he couldn’t cope trying to think and pour at the same time. Didn’t come back to mop up his mess either. He tried to convince me to have the rice the Southern way - with brown gravy, it didn't really sound that great but I thought 'when in Rome'. Have to say it was pretty bland even after I added Seasoning. . They ran out of straws and it was pretty cold – over airconditioned. It was handy for us – that’s about all I can say. They are open for breakfast (we passed on that the next day), lunch and dinner. . Leave a Comment Theme: OtherComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: 2701 Battleship Pkwy, Mobile, Alabama
