Court Square Fountain: Photography at night!

Being a photography nut, I love to go out and take pictures at night, but only if it is safe. Montgomery to me seemed pretty safe because everyone was so friendly. So I ventured out and took a couple of night time shots. I kind of figured they would have certain historical sites lit up a night, so I took advantage of it. So venture out and see what you may find!

Park some where safely and near by just incase. Take a tripod with you too. I found a really nice one the folds up into my suitcase easily.

The Gambler is a 24 hour social club. The only reason it's a social club is so they can get around the state's liquor laws which forbid the selling of booze on Sundays UNLESS you are a private club. So everyone is a private club. I'm a club member of Applebee's for cripes sake. It's an effin' joke. Anyhow, the Gambler's got a dozen or so pool tables cheap beer, and even cheaper clientele.
A genuine honky tonk if there ever was one. The place is full of mentholated goodness. There is a smoking section and a REALLY smoking section. The tables haven't been wiped down since Carter was in the White house, and you can always find Hank Williams on the juke here (Hank Sr. actually has a musuem here and he and his wife's corpses are buried in this pit of a town) and you need a shot of penecillin after just talking to the female bartenders. I've had my truck broken into here, seen two white guys clobber a black guy, and had a yokel actually try to stab a female friend of mine in the face because she turned him down (he stabbed her through the hand because she put it up to blcok her face in time). This place is possibly the closest thing you'll ever find to a saloon of the old west - only without an ounce of the nostalgic charm. You will meet the seediest element that Montgomery has to offer here - it's my kind of place. Oh, and Galaga. It's got Galaga, too.

Dress for two steppin'and butt kickin'. Wear your good jeans and boots and if you really want to fit in, knock a few of your teeth out and be a grandparent by the age of thirty.

  • Montgomery has virtually no nightlife whatsoever. If you came here for a night on the town, prepare to be sorely disappointed!

    Woodmere Boulevard: Woodmere Taverns

  • Woodmere is the local "Cheers" -- you'll meet a wide variety of people ranging in ages, cultures, races, and social classes. It's the local melting pot. Thursdays and the weekends are the busiest (after 10PM) and stays open until 2AM (then the locals head out to Doodlehopper's where they drink until dawn). There are 5 bars (the 5th is an outside storage unit converted into a makeshift bar for the patio area -- which is a great place to sit out in the element and have a cozy conversation during the summer months). The music is DJ piped in and ranges to suit the crowd/mood. There is a dance floor (and lots of "local entertainment" -- both the dancers and the watchers). The maximum capacity is 450 and sports a $5 cover charge at the door -- but a quick chat with the "regulars" sitting around the main bar make it worth it! Say hello to Bea (the short, sassy, blonde bartender) and prepare to chuckle!

Casual -- from year round costumes, jeans/t-shirts, suit/tie, and near naked chics!

Michael's Pub is a friendly neighborhood pub off Vann Street.

Dress casual. Shirts and shoes required, but there are people claiming to be lawyers and brain surgeons.

    Montgomery Brewing Company

Montgomery Brewing Company is Montgomery's only brew pub, and is my favorite place in town. In the early afternoon, stop by for happy hour and appetizers with a glass of your favorite brew. In the evening, this is a great spot for a very nice dinner. As night rolls on, stick around for live bands, dancing, and pool.

One of my favorite meals here has always been the Creole gumbo ($4 or $7), and I have also enjoyed the chicken breast sandwiches and burgers. We also liked the fried alligator tail and the pizzas. Food is served from 11am to 2pm and 5:30pm until 9 or 10pm.

After Alabama changed their laws in 1992 to allow microbrewing, this brew pub opened in 1995. This historic building was constructed in 1913 as an equipment storage warehouse, and has become a wonderful example of reusing older structures.
