I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to venture to see this even though the book "The Great Gatsby" was one of my first favorite literatures I had read at a very early age. Probably too young at the time, but I was very mature for my age. It turned out to be a very interesting visit and the curator Mr. Michael McCreedy was informative and helpful in educating me with the lives of the Fitzgerald's. The one thing that I really enjoyed was reading the actual handwriting of Zelda to F.Scott. And not knowing what a wonderful artist she was too as well as being a wonderful Arthur herself.

No admission fees, but donations are accepted.

Directions: Exit I-85 right onto Curry then left onto Arba and then right onto Decatur then left onto Carter Hill road and then turn left right onto Dunbar.

It is located among the residents since this was The Fitzgerald home for one year. Now it is a landmark.

I heard about his resting place being in a very lovely cemetery and that most Hank Williams fan usually makes a pilgrimage here, so it got the best of my curiosity. Well, I ventured out to see why and to my amazement to find a huge fan named Dan that was singing away with his guitar some old Hank Williams songs. He was very good by the way and obviously a very loyal fan.

You can contact the Hank Williams Museum for more information.
Directions: From the Statue go to the 2nd light turn right on Jefferson St pass Montgomery Police Station see Oakwood Cemetry Annex-1304 on left continue on Wetumpk Road until you see Hank Williams marble momument last entrance go to top of hill turn right at fork.

This is a wonderful little place to visit if it is for a drink at night or dinner. The folks here were so hospitable and so wonderful to talk too. I just wondered in because some loyal Hank Williams Fans said this was the last place he sang in just before he died. There is even a wonderful mural painted from the 1940's period on the wall too in the bar area. I went there during the day because I am not keen in venturing out too much at night. So stop by for a chat, drink of coke and checkout the mural even.

"Stand up for righteousness, stand up for truth; and God will be at your side forever." --Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On January 30, 1956, MLK’s home was bombed, an act which inspired the MIA to file a federal law suit directly challenging the laws that established bus segregation. During the month of February, the city police arrested nearly 100 African Americans for violating Alabama’s anti – boycott law, placing a national focus on the City of Montgomery. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested, tried, and convicted on March 22.

In April, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the laws requiring bus segregation; however, the mayor of Montgomery refused to abide by the ruling.

On Thursday, December 20, 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling was finally put into place after a very long legal battle. Despite numerous external factors – Ku Klux Klan intimidation, police harassment, and bombings – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and several other civil rights leaders boarded a public bus, in front of him home, on December 21, 1956, highlighting the success of the boycott.

In the picture you see the main lobby of the Montgomery Police Station where MLK was booked and processed.

    The Rosa Parks Incident

“Memories of our lives, of our works and our deeds will continue in others.” -- Rosa Parks.

On December 1, 1955, while riding a bus in the City of Montgomery, Alabama, Mrs. Rosa Parks, a 42-year-old African-American woman, refused to obey the order of the bus driver, Mr. James Blake, who commanded that she (Mrs. Parks) give up her seat on the bus in order to make room for a boarding white passenger. Parks’s act of defiance resulted in her immediate arrest by a local police officer who had been flagged down by Mr. Blake. Even though Mrs. Parks was seated in the “colored” section of the bus, and therefore had not been occupying a white-only seat, she was nevertheless charged with violating a city ordinance pertaining to the city’s segregation law.

Parks’s refusal to budge from her seat and subsequent arrest led to the popularized Montgomery Bus Boycott, wherein local African Americans protested against both Parks’s arrest and the discriminatory practices of the public transportation administrators. Nearly a year later, the protestors would win their battle as the city’s buses and other forms of public transportation desegregated.

Even though Parks would earn nationally acclaim and a spot as one of the most influential figure in U.S. History, Parks’s actions were not applauded by everyone: she would end up losing her job as a seamstress in a local department store. Today, however, she is regarded as the “Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement.”3

In the picture you see the exact location of where the incident took place, directly in front of what is now the Rosa Parks Library.

As you maybe able to see, the garden is relatively new & unfinished. The plan is to make this an area where parents of handicapped children can meet & spend some quality time with their children, outdoors amongst the singing birds & the soothing atmosphere of Mother Nature.

Founded by Father Harold Purcell in the 1930s, the City of Saint Jude included a church, a school, medical facilities, social center & rectory. Its mission was to provide spiritual, educational, health & social services to the black citizens of Montgomery. It was created-brick by brick-by the black citizens of Montgomery who looked to the area as a refuge from the harsh reality of discrimination.. Sadly, due to the lack of funding, the school is operating in its last year. If you are interested in lending a helping hand please contact me ASAP for information on how to do so.

In order to keep the Father Purcell Children?s Center properly funded & operational, administrators of the City of Saint Jude will more than likely decide to close the doors of its school, which is sadly draining its economical resources.
The center is home to many children with numerous handicaps & deformities, resulting from child abuse, birth defects, & medical malpractice. These children are wards of the State of Alabama, sons & daughters of the poor, & orphans. Walking down the halls of the facility is both uplifting & profoundly heartbreaking. If you ever find yourself in the area pay a visit to TJ or Diamond & tell them Anthony & Mike say hello.
Again, if you are interested in helping please contact me ASAP.

Selma To Montgomery March & The City of Saint Jude

It was here on this athletic field where the City of Saint Jude so bravely permitted the Selma to Montgomery marchers to camp overnight. Prior to this allowance, the marchers had been refused authorization to set up a camp by every church along their route due to fear of reprisal (understandable). It was here where some of America’s greatest musicians-lie Peter, Paul & Mary-entertained the marchers in order to keep their spirits high. However this decision would prove tragic for the church, as it lost funding & skilled personnel in medical science, all of whom being outraged over the presence of the marchers. Many who quit were bigots & appraisers of the social standing of non-whites.

Shortly after Rosa Parks’ arrest on Thursday, December 1, 1955, several entities within Montgomery’s African-American community decided to take action against segregated seating on the city buses. These organizations (NAACP to name just one) united with the community to create the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Due to its successful start, the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) came into being with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. becoming its president. As its leader, MLK became the unfortunate target of white hatred. On January 26, 1956, MLK was arrested for the very first time, being charged with conspiracy. MLK was incarcerated for quite some time in the Montgomery City Jail.

In the picture you see the main police building where MLK would have been “booked” or processed for his alleged crime.
