Chris has been an establishment for a very long time. It specializes in Hot Dogs and has other typical American type food. It is not very clean and it is very dated, but it seems that is what makes it so charming to the locals. Cheap meal for sure;-)

I was on a walking tour of downtown Montgomery at lunch time and noticed that this place was packed with what appeared to be local folks, so I went in and joined them. Although the restaurant was busy, the service was fast and friendly.
The menu for Flames Grille Cafe calls it "The Original Taste of the Past," and they do a good job of living up to that motto. I asked my server what was their #1lunch order and she said the "Flames Original Hamburger," so I had one along with the Gourmet Cheese and Bacon Fries. Yummy! It was a good choice. There is a fantastic greasy-spoon burger joint a few blocks east of the Capitol Building the the First White House of the Confederacy. It's easy to find, it's a free standing building, not part of a strip mall or anything. Parking was pretty tight. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, let me know!! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

If your car breaks down and you are stuck in this horrible state for any length of time, try Dreamland Ribs. It's not in Montgomery - nothing of worth save for a Waffle House or two is in Montgomery - it's near Tuscaloosa. Go to the original location. As the sign outside says, 'Ain't nothing like 'em - nowhere.'
The restaurant looks like a garage, actually built cinderblock by cinderblock by John Bishop Sr. in 1958. A host of withered and rusted memorabelia line the walls.
Don't worry about a menu, ribs are the only thing they sell - order half a slab or full slab. They come plopped onto an old pie pan covered in a sheet of wax paper with a stack of Wonder bread to mop up the excess BBQ sauce. The ribs are cooked over hickory in two stone pits and lathered with the special Dreamland sauce. Believe me, these ribs are worth venturing into this hole of a state. Think of it as a pilgrimage to a rib holy land. I love Chinese food, especially buffets! King Buffet is a little cheaper ($6.75 for dinner), but China Buffet is better. ($8.50 for dinner)

It's been a few years since I've been there, but this family run restaurant serves fantastic ribs and southern cooking at great prices. They also happen to have live jazz acts playing while you are eating dinner.

This is definatley a hold-in-the-wall locals place. The Capital Grill put a good sized meal of Southern home cooking in front of me for under $10. The afternoon/evening special included at least a half dozen meats, over a dozen sides, bread, and drink. I chose the hamburger steak with onions and gravy for the meat. For the sides I had turnip greens, fresh snap beans, fried okra and corn bread. A sweet tea washed the whole thing down. Everything appeared to be fresh, and homemade. The atmosphere was of a place that had been open for decades without any unnecessary changes. It was, however, a very clean place. After the meal I was too full to try the desert.
