Built in 1885 and after many years of service this church symbolizes the grace, strength, love of community and a pillar of respect to all those who seek her services. She was once called the Colored Baptist Church since it was the second Baptish Church for blacks, but she has since been renamed after the Founder of the city Andrew Dexter and founder of the Civil Rights movement Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. On June 3, 1974 she was designated has a historical landmark by the National Park Service of the United States Department of Interior. She has been lovingly restored and still holds services for her community today. In the basement, the tour begins with a short movie that explains the events of the civil rights movement, is also a beautiful mural that depicts the events leading up to the movement and the wonderful individuals who where involved. It is a must see. The tour ends on the top floor in the chapel where they still hold services. Our wonderful tour guide for this day was Pastor Michael F. Thurman the 27th ministor of this church.

My advice is to visit the Capitol building first before you set off on your journey filled with historical events. Events that my heritage is very much a part of from both sides of my family. The orginal Capitol was built in 1847, but burned down in 1849. In 1850-51 it was rebuilt by design of Philadelphia'a architect Stephen Button in Greek Revival. The rear of the building was added in 1885, and the side wings were added in 1906 & 1912. The front steps have witness events such in 1861 when Jefferson Davis declaring a newly formed Confederate States of America and witness events such as 1965 led by Dr. Martin Luther King Selma to Montgomery Civil rights march ended at her steps.

Please enter from the front because you'll find your way around better. There will be such wonderful guides as Aroine Irby to fill you in on the history of the building. Plus, they give you a white map the fills you in also with some historical information. I loved the map because it was so simple and showed you exactly where all the wonderful historical sites you should visit. Very handy it is! Oh, plenty of parking really on Dexter has long as you park where the grey meters are. NOT RED!

This memorial represents the struggle and the sacrifice of those black & white who paid ultimately with their lives. The wheel has ingraved names and time frames 1954 - 1968 of those beautiful individuals who struggle for freedom. It is here and in the hearts and minds of their families that they will always be recognized as "Hero's"!

Does it matter what color we all are? We are all the same underneath, flesh, a beating heart, a soul, and the very thing that God has made equal among us, our Red blood that gives us life.

If you visit Montgomery you have to venture to this wonderful historical treasure of Alabama. They've moved many of the old buildings here from all over so we all could enjoy them here and learn from the past. You'll find some fantastic folks dressed in period clothes that are very knowledgable about each of the buildings past. They have the park broken up in three section on three blocks. Please note their are still residents that live in the surrounds area. You have to check in at the LOEB Reception center that is locate next to a wonderful childrens park. There is a fee, but well worth it!

Over 700 Union soliders where housed near this site as a Confederate Prison. It was an old cotton gin depot that was only 200 feet long and 10 feet wide that was rat infested without any blankets or anything to sleep on from mid April to Decemeber in 1862. Nearly 198 died here before they were moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

This is a beautifully restored Union Station that now houses the Montgomery Visitor Center. It was built in 1898 and reflects the magnitude of how important this station must have been to Montgomery during the turn of the century. It has a wonderful staff of people who are so willing to make sure you see everything Montgomery has to offer. It has a little gift shop and plus the present a little movie in the back on the history of Montgomery and has some wonderful displays in the lobby to see too!

Warren Reese, the Montgomery mayor who from 1885-1889 helped the city build both an electric street car system and this beautiful Court Square fountain. Topped by a statue of Hebe, Goddess of Youth and Cupbearer to the Gods, the fountain was built in 1885 over an existing artesian basin.
