The University of Alabama's Museum of Natural History provides a brief look into the local natural history. Displays of ancient dinosaur bones and foot prints of Allosaurs to exhibits of local wildlife and fauna. There is also an interesting display of wagons and tools used to map Alabama in the late 1800's. A whopping $2.00 admission.
The President's Mansion was completed in 1841 but was considered too much for a college president. During the Civil War, a few days before Lee's surrender the President's wife valiantly saved the mansion from the Union troops ordered to burn the University. It was designed in the Greek Revivalist style.
A short drive across the river is Northport, which has an artists area in its historic old town. A few hundred yards down is a trestle that is still in use.
The City has built a bicycle / walking train on the West side of the old town, on the South side of the river.
