Scenic Overlook on Turnagain Arm
Favorite thing: Any place that one might pull over the car would be a scenic overlook on this gorgeous stretch of road. However, the state of Alaska has specifically designated this location as a "scenic overlook" complete with a series of boardwalks and observation platforms. I can't argue with them--it is scenic.

Tides of Turnagain Arm
Favorite thing: The tides of Turnagain Arm are incredibly impressive. This place has the 2nd largest difference in tides in North America and something called a tidal bore which is uncommon, overall. This isn't a tsunami but it is a tidal wave and I recall seeing this on TV a couple years ago. Because the tide difference is so great, this huge wave forms (not all the time and not even some of the time, but it does happen here) and people choose this time to catch "the" wave. Due to the mudflats, it's pretty dangerous. However, just seeing the difference is tides is pretty amazing.
Highway 1 along Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet
Favorite thing: For my money, the most scenic highway in the U.S. If you are familiar with the Porsche Boxer commercial which airs on U.S. tv, it was filmed on this road. As the old codger in the vintage Boxer says, "Holy Moly!"

Turnagain Arm: Mountains, Water, Trees and Ice
Favorite thing: Every inch of Turnagain Arm is brilliant. Mountains on either side of the channel. The forests climb the mountainsides. And even at the very end of summer, the mountains sport ice, snow and glaciers at the higher elevations.

You must take a drive down...
Favorite thing: You must take a drive down toward the south just before sunset. If you turn around at Beluga Point or Girdwood and head back when the sun dips down below the horizon, you will see a sunset that can only be seen here. Summer is fine to do this, but the better colors come in the winter. Obviously you need a clear sky.
Fondest memory: I remember when this town was much smaller than it is now. My grandfather was a buisness owner for 35 years and he handed the resturant to my mother. The buisness folded when McDonalds opened up down the street. Now that McDonalds is gone because they couldn't keep up with the street vendors downtown. Ironic eh? Big corporation squashed by the little guy.
