Pepe's North of the Border by Stephen-KarenConn Pepe's North of the Border is THE place to eat in Barrow. When I was there all three of the spacious dining rooms were bustling with locals, tourists, and even a meeting of the Rotary Club. The restaurant is the dream and passion of a remarkable gutsy woman, Fran Tate. Fran spent her first 5 years in Barrow as an engineer, designing runways and drilling sites. When that job ended she refused a transfer back to a desk job in Anchorage. Already in her 50's, she opened this Mexican restaurant which has flourished since it's inception back in 1978. A book about her adventures in this remote Eskimo village, Tacos on the Tundra, has won her a certain amount of fame, including a stint on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Now well into her 70's, Fran is still the hands-on overseer of her operation. She is loved by the villagers not only for her great food, friendliness and can-do attitude, but also as the individual who first brought water delivery and a sewage disposal service to this remote Arctic outpost.
Since I wanted to truly experience "Tacos on the Tundra" that's what I ordered for lunch. They were big, hot and flavorable - as good as any I have had in the lower 48, (or in Mexico for that matter) and better than most. Leave a Comment

Sam and Lee's Restaurant by Stephen-KarenConn A local native couple I met in Barrow recommended this restaurant to me as a place that serves bigger portions and charges less money than the restaurants a couple of blocks away but nearer the major tourist hotel. I took their advice and went here for a late supper - around 10 p.m. Since the sun didn't set until after midnight, and then only briefly (in mid-August), it didn't seem so late. The Restaurant is owned and operated by a hard working Korean family who have been in Barrow for 20 years. They live in the same building with the restaurant and are open daily from 6:00 a.m. 'til 2:00 a.m.
I had the Almond Chicken (freshly toasted almonds with chicken & vegetables) served with wonton soup and fried rice. It was excellent, and the portion was more than I could eat. They gave free refills on the iced tea, which cost only $1.00. Osaka Japanese & American Restaurant by Stephen-KarenConn This little restaurant is an extension to the front of the home of the Japanese family which runs it. A large sign in front said: BREAKFAST, So the morning found me there. I thought the hours of operation were very long for such a small town. However, long hours are common for businesses here in "the land of the midnight sun." Another interesting thing is that this and all the other restaurants in Barrow offer free delivery, after 11:00 a.m., with a $10.00 minimum order. The service was excellent. Hours of Operation Daily: 7 a.m. - 2 a.m. Sundays: 7:00 a.m. - midnight
I had three eggs, bacon, hash browns, and whole wheat toast with jam for $9.95. Iced tea, my favorite breakfast beverage, was $1.50 more. The entire meal was very good and the hash browns were exceptional. Another option is Arctic pizza. I did not try it. By the way, what is the difference between Arctic pizza and Italian pizza? Are they frozen?? :p Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Pepe's Mexican Restaurant located right next to Top of the World Hotel. It offers a variety of mexican food as well as other western dishes. The owner is a nice and beautiful Mexican lady. I had pasta there and it tasted ok. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Barrow has a very good pizza restaurant called Arctic Pizza. If you go there, you really can't miss it. The owner is from somewhere else, but I can't remember where right now. Remember that all the ingredients must be shipped in from far away, so prices are higher than you might expect. Leave a Comment

Pepe's Mexican Rest. definately has flair, thanks to the locals who work there. A great place to frequent, also a sponsor of the Polar Bear swim each year! But if you love pizza, Arctic Pizza is the place to go. From the second floor, you can dine with a glorious view of the Beaufort Sea! The relaxing, almost romantic atmosphere upstairs at Arctic Pizza is a must. The upbeat vibe of Pepe's is a great escape from the Arctic chill.
I definately recommend the pizza at Arctic Pizza, thick crust topped with motherloads of veggies or any peculiar topping of your choice! At Pepe's your taste buds will enjoy a milder treat with the bean burrito. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
