Chiniak Island Travel Guide
Explore Chiniak Island
Chiniak Bay
herzog63 Says:
There are many cool rock formations in Chiniak Bay. The small rock that is in the left center is called Thumb's up as it resembles the popular hand signal.
Twin Creek
herzog63 Says:
You can stop and fish here (in season) or go hiking up the side of the stream! This isn't one of the hot spots of the area as there is only a very small run of salmon that return here. Roslyn Creek which is about 2½ miles back has a much better run!
Naural Beauty!!!!!!
herzog63 Says:
The drive from Kodiak to Chiniak is beautiful!! There are many spots to pull over and take in the view! Bring lots of film!

What makes it so special is that it is the only restaurant in Chiniak. The next place is twenty miles away on bad roads. You can dine outdoors if you like, weather permitting.
Favorite Dish: I haven't had the chance to eat there.

Decisions
herzog63 Says:
At Mile 30 you will come to a Fork in the road! If you go right you will go to Pashagshak State Park , Narrow Cape, Fossil Beach, Rocket Launch Site. To go to Chiniak you must turn left! Notice the bullet holes in the sign!
Driving Out!!
herzog63 Says:
The road to Chiniak is mostly crushed rock so it can eat your tires up!! But the drive is beautiful!!
Kodiak Island Winery: Winery
herzog63 Says:
A beautiful setting for a winery. Set back next to the trees with a beautiful beach right near by!

No Warning Signs!!
herzog63 Says:
After mile 30 you will not see Warning signs telling you of sharp turns, rocks falling etc... So you're on your own!! Notice the bullet holes in the sign!
Your food may fall on the ground!!
herzog63 Says:
Chiniak has alot of great places for a picnic. You better stick to the beach and avoid the Chiniak Park as the picnic table here is in very bad shape!
Keep a weather eye
kaloz Says:
The weather can change quickly, so watch for squalls or storms especially if you are in or on the water.
Tubing
herzog63 Says:
Tubing is getting very popular on many of the small ponds in Kodiak. Your best chances are in September and October as the Silver Salmon are up in the lakes and Ponds by then.
Side Roads
herzog63 Says:
Many of the side roads just turn into trails for 4 -wheelers or just turn into Animal trails. But they are great for hiking.

Chiniak has awesome curls if the winds are right.
Equipment: shortboard, boogieboard, don't forget your wetsuit, the water is chilly even in the summer.

Address: In the ocean, not too far from the beach
Poor Signs
herzog63 Says:
Here in Chiniak as well as all over Alaska we have bored people with guns!! Road signs don't shoot back and they make great targets for the local Yahoos with no animals to shoot!
Blue Skies, Tall Grass & Beaches
herzog63 Says:
You check out the interesting areas right near the road. Usually to get to the beach you will have to walk through the tall grass which is very stout!
Totems
kaloz Says:
Keep your eyes open, they may be wathing you!! The pole people. These resourseful creatures have vowed never to be taken alive!
Sneeking up on a pole person, and getting a picture.
Chiniak Playground
kaloz Says:
Keep an open mind, and have fun.
Herzog63 is training to work the bigger digger. This is a pretty cool contraption. But he wouldn't let me play. The bully!!! He's got a picture of me on the slide, so I think he's gonna get even for this.
