    Ghost Town

    Liberty Falls Alaska

Chitina Alaska is a small 'ghost' town that lies a couple of hours north of Valdez. It is an interesting detour from the long ride...set aside 2-3 hours and be sure to stop by Liberty Falls. You can often spot Eagles and Bears in this area. Be sure to look into Dipnetting, Bungee Jumping, tours to the old Kennecott Mine and McCarthy areas if you have even more time to explore!

At a glacial moulin, an ice cave

If you've never been out on a glacier you've got to experience it for yourself! An amazing experience! Creaks, groans etc fro mthe glacier's shifting. Amazing crevasses and sparkling blue pools. Try ice climbing. Guides will take you with no experience required.

Peaking into the depths of the Root Glacier!

Being on a glacier is like nothing I've ever experienced! The views of huge snow-covered mountains, icefalls and the tiny town of Kennicott in the distance are incredible. This is a place I want to go back to again and again. I was able to experience both a glacier hike and an ice climbing day with St. Elias Alpine Guides and had an amazing time. I recommend this for anyone who loves being outdoors and off the beaten path. I enjoyed the professional demeanor of the St. Elias Guides and their friendly, personal attitudes. They seems to love this place as much as I did and had a lot of knowledge about the area and its history. I'd recommend this trip for first time hikers and climbers as well as those experienced in the outdoors.

    Flightseeing or backcountry drop-offs

    Flight to Skolai Pass, Hole-in-the-Wall-Glacier

For those who want something really different, try hopping aboard a small plane and goingfor a flightseeover the13.2 million acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. See 16000 foot mountains, abandoned mine sites, glacial expanses, varieties of wildlife and many other unique land formations. On a backcountry drop-off you can get dropped off miles away from civilization to explore the backcountry on your own. THere are many price ranes to choose fro and some prices are quite affordable! McCarthy Air offers both of these services.

    McCarthy/Kennicott Trail Rides

    by JRR27 Written Jun 6, 2003
    Horseback rides! Yeeha!

Trail rides with a "real cowboy", Alaskan style. Amazing scenery and awesome historical ruins, too. Plus, the ease and adventure of horseback. No experience is necessary and everyone is really friendly. Tons of character!!!!!
