    Clam Gulch Parking and Camping

    by herzog63 Updated Jul 31, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

After we figured out that we couldn't park at the beach for free with our Rented Mini-vans due to soft sand we went back to the Parking/Camping area and asked if we could have a discount for parking as we were a visiting little league baseball team and would only be at Clam Gulch for a couple of hours.....the guy was very nice and didn't charge us and he asked us to drive under 5 MPH as there hadn't been any rain for a while and the roads were VERY dusty!! It's about a 200 yard walk down the hill from the Fee Station to the beach.
I think it was $5 per vehicle for day use. There are camping sites here as well for $10 per night. For more info you can contact this:

Based on the photo you will come in from the right and the road to the left is the beach access road. Once you come to the fee station just pay and park.....DON'T CONTINUE unless you have a four wheel drive vehicle!!!

    Small trails

CIam Gulch State Park is quite small in area so don't think there is much for hiking possibilities here but we managed to find a small trail. The park is bordered on both sides by private land. Most people just come here for Beach activities and the great views over Cook Inlet with Mount Redoubt being the highlight. Be careful if you're hiking near the bluff!! On wrong step and you will regret it!!

    Clam Gulch State Recreation Site

    by herzog63 Updated Jul 31, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you go to Clam Gulch State Recreation Site and want to walk to the beach don't drive all the way down to the beach unless you have a four wheel drive vehicle!!! The sand is very soft!! There is only a very small place to turn around at the bottom of the hill. So you will want to park your vehicle at the top of the hill and walk down. We found this out the hard way!! hahha 3 Vans full of baseball players drive all the way to the bottom at the same time so you would have had a good laugh at watching all 3 of us manuevering as we got turned around. There is a small sign at the top of the hill warning you of this but do you think we could read?? hahaha NO!! We were looking for FREE parking.
