What to buy: Alaska's Coolest Animals is my favourite video brought from Denali. "Wrestle with polar bears, swim underwater with sea otters, hunt with eagles - in fact, you’ll meet and learn about more than 50 different Alaska animals! Alaska’s Coolest Animals is a fascinating and fun-filled wildlife adventure!"
If you are backpacking in Denali National Park, I recommend you pick up all your necessities before you drive or fly to the Park. However, there are opportunities in and around the park to pick up a lot of things you may have forgotten.
Inside the National Park, there is a fairly large convience store, the McKinley Mercantile, where campers and RV'ers can get some food and other items. The store is located just inside the main entrance. There is a small gift shop in the main Visitor's Center where you can buy souvenir items as well as maps, binoculars, books, and bug spray. There also is a small gift shop at the Eielson Visitor's Center and at Kantishna.
Outside the park, the small town of McKinley Park has some restaurants, gas, and small convienence stores. The Denali Lodge has a gift shop with some reasonably-priced items - I actually forgot to bring a fleece to go camping (dumb, dumb move) but the Lodge had a great heavyweight fleece on sale for only about $20. It even had a cool "Denali" logo on it! ;-) You can also pick up some items in the small towns of Healy, north of the park, and Cantwell, south of the park.
